Under a new law in Belgium - the first of its kind in the world - this will now be the case. Sex workers will be entitled to official employment contracts, health insurance, pensions, maternity leave and sick days. Essentially, it will be treated like any other job.

Its an opportunity for us to exist as people, Sophie says.

Even back in the 90's when I was in the Navy, Turkey of all places had government run licensed brothels that provided workers free medical care and and social services. They were licensed and had ID cards with mandatory health checks. The state run brothels had armed guards there too provided by police. Again this was in Turkey. I was pretty surprised by that honestly.

True enough. I'm a 37yo Belgian and AFAIK sex work has always been legal here. Yet it's only since 10-15 years ago that the government is actually making an effort to protect the workers.
