Why do so many people choose to remain uninformed? Not just about politics, but nearly every single thing that could better themselves. Information used to be a privilege only the ruling elites got access to.

You can be in a library that contains the answers to everything but at a point the fact there is SO MUCH information it becomes a hindrance and overwhelming to some.

Then you also have to account for the fact there is so much misinformation you have to weed through what is real and what isnt and some people get legitimately fooled. CE considers itself so smart and Ive seen obvious fake tweets people posted and a bunch of people are like Wait is this real? when its obviously a fake Elon tweet.

These are a couple major factors. Too much info, not always correct info.

It has been suggested that we are living through an information crisis. Comparable to the invention of writing and the printing press.

We are deluged by 'information', and have not yet adapted to the situation. Tools like 'common sense' and 'discernment' are not always up to the job of coping with sophisticated misinformation and the sheer weight of material available.

IMO, I don't think information or disinformation is the problem. I think people will believe in whatever the fuck they want to believe regardless of any information or facts because being delusional and having a headcanon better fits their narrative. The social and emotional comfort of maintaining these beliefs can sometimes outweigh the need for accuracy or truth.

I think finding practicality with information is much more important than the knowing of it.

Its good to be a walking encyclopedia, but I couldve consulted the book and saved time and at least seen the truths with my own capacities instead of third hand.

It's not just that disinformation exists. People are emotional, and having your already preconceived notions validated feels good. Conversely, taking in information that conflicts with your views doesn't feel good, in fact it can feel like a personal attack.

People don't form their world views, delusions, and 'headcanons' in a vacuum.

They are a product of the information they consume. No one is born believing one thing or another.

The fact that people are doing that has repercussions that go well beyond any harm they may do to themselves.

It's a problem for society, not just the individual.

Most people are fundamentally stupid. So many goddamn times I've seen people argue about shit that could easily be answered with a google search or something and both have phones in their pockets and they'd rather just argue than take the 10 seconds to find out the factual answer.

Frankly I've given up.

"Regardless if it's individual or societal, it's actually individual" is just silly. You are born into biases, and maybe a lucky few of us aren't totally bound by them.

You could argue that society puts pressure on people to consume.

But that aside, this is a problem that is having a negative effect on everybody. When you respond to it with 'hey, I do everything right, it's your fault if you don't', you kind of miss the point in the rush to assert your own superiority.

That's the problem though. Legitimate news outlets also spread disinformation if it fits their bias. As we've seen with Fox News and other right wing media with Trump and Biden.

Like remember when they were spreading the lie that Biden was confused and wandering around during the G7 summit in June? But it was intentionally cropped to make him look worse

It is partly societal because we're not doing a good job educating people on how to navigate information. But at the end of the day, it's up to the individual to do the work, not society.

And bias can be changed on an individual level.

It still doesn't explain why people can't just do a quick Google search. Is it just laziness?

Have you not considered searching this yourself? I thought the media pipeline was a well-known concept here, but this is the second time this question has come up today.

tl;dr not only does human bias adjust how you look for information, but the algorithms in searching for things deliberately funnel you towards what it thinks you want. Different people will get different answers, and there are so many professional, official-looking lies out there.

Kurzgesagt sums it up pretty well in a video they made on this subject about a year ago. It basically just boils down to social tribalism being stronger then it ever has in the internet age, with people choosing to only listen and believe the things that fit their own social bubble.

Those algorithms don't appeal to bias to inform people, they do it to direct people to and through specific websites and the brand ideals or ads in them.
