If I lose my current job I can go back to my old employer since I left on good terms. But my old job was worse.

the job market is probably worse now but when I got laid off last January it took me about 2 months to find another (better) software development job, and the company that hired me really dragged their feet with the process

Not fast enough

If I can accept a pay cut, then same day. Else a few weeks.

Prolly a week. My last job has already offered me a supervisor position to come back.

Probably the next day if Im not being picky, theres plenty out there.

Seriously? You can find another job very quickly.

Quickly, but Id probably take a break for at least two weeks. I wouldnt get anything close to what Im paid now though unfortunately.

Same job elsewhere? Probably take a while.

A job in general though? Depending on how early i was let go i might be able to have one before the day ended. With only one real exception pretty much every branch of my family could swing a job for one of us. The job i have now is a result of that even.

As someone who has been and knows folks who have been laid off in the past two years, I think many of you are way too optimistic. Job hunting in 2024 is absolutely awful, even if you have a strong network. My company got hit by a wave of layoffs in 2023 and it took me just under three months to find a new solid job, and I consider myself extremely ****ing lucky. Many folks I know have been in 6+ month long career job hunts, and theyre absolutely qualified individuals that just cant get callbacks or break through the noise of mountains of applicants per job. A job that would get 100+ candidates in 23 is getting 1000+ in 24.

I regularly get approached and get offered jobs by people looking to poach me from my current employer. Im confident that Id be fine.

Probably a week or two if I applied myself.

My usual pace, probably a couple of months.

Considering I get mails from recruiters almost weekly, I'say not only quickly, but I'd also get to pick my favorite

Lower your standards and you'll find jobs eezy peezy

Hopefully within a couple of weeks. I'm having a tough time finding a part time job compatible with my current schedule.

I think you underestimate the strong network.

My husband saw a job he was interested in. Knew one guy at the company (the CIO), turns out he was the hiring manager. He applied, had an interview the next day, he got offered the job in a couple days with a 60% raise.

There's still a worker shortage in my area. Almost every place is constantly looking, and I know the gas station down the street would hire me immediately. So I'd likely be able to find one within a day if I tried.

It wouldn't take long to get a substitute teaching certificate in my state and that would hold me over until I found something more permanent.

Unemployment rates have continued to be low during the Biden administration. You might not find a job you want but depending on the state it's probably not hard finding a job that pays out better than unemployment, even part time.

I'd only be getting 1/3rd of my current salary if I ended up on unemployment per my state guidelines which at least would give me time to find a good fit.

Some grocery stores near me and also retail shops. So pretty good I would think.

It varies on location. I commute more than 45 minutes for my current job, but they pay pretty well. Staying in my immediate area would take a bit longer to find if I want to stay in my preferred pay range.

I'm a terrible interviewer, so I'm not sure how fast it would be. I work in IT, though, and have experience in securing and administering databases and the OS a bit, so in theory it shouldn't be too hard.

I might be finding out soon if Trump and his goons demolish my particular part of the government, though. At least I'm in Defense, so I might be spared. Or not since they're vengeful morons.

Probably would be a while. When I was laid off from my last job back in 2017 it took me 2 years to find my current one.

There is not many programming jobs in my area

If I was healthy, it would be tomorrow. I'd move back find a place to rent. I'd start again. I'm a better off this time. Starting from 0 then vs 300k now.

Since you are a cleared amcit, you are not competing against the usual pool of IT workers. Even if you are applying for an uncleared position, having it on your resume gives you an edge.

i live in a small town as a wfh software developer

i could probably do DoorDash or uber next day but wouldnt be enough to cover fuel

meanwhile my fields in a decline so would be months before I even found something especially with rto policies

Given that the US is one of the few countries I wouldnt consider working in, that doesnt massively affect me.

Probably not very easily. I live in a blue state, so we are so overwhelmed with red state refugees that you can barely find a loaf of bread at the store. There is probably more competition than ever before
