I'm so shocked to see that Gob, who also defends Dave Chappelle and J.K. Rowling at every opportunity, is a huge JonTron fan and wants to sweep his "controversial statements" (translation: open, loudmouthed bigotry) under the rug because "video funny".

I've watched a handful of his more recent videos.

They fit squarely in the "I have no more ideas but this is my career so I am gonna check the content boxes people expect from my videos and nothing else"

They feel hollow, oddly corporate, and soulless.

I never see a new video of his and go "Oh nice!", it's always "well I might as well see what the fuck a 2024 JonTron video looks like"

Even putting his racism aside, it felt like he really didn't know what he was doing after his year on Game Grumps. It felt like he stopped doing videos about games or movie reviews and just became a really lazy reaction channel.

I know it's a phrase that existed long before but I've seen it repeated a lot recently when somebody problematic is being discussed so I'm just curious of the buzzwords have circled back around on each other

JonTron really is an enigma. I hate what he said before but I used to like his content a lot. He seemed to fall off after Game Grumps, he's not as funny as he used to be and he no longer does game reviews or reactions, yet I never really feel compelled to unsubscribe because he doesn't fill up my sub box with subpar videos either. I guess I just keep forgetting he exists until he suddenly pops up and I go "meh...I guess I can see what this is about."

As an editor i respect his skills, but something seems missing now. That's aside from the whole outing yourself as a racist thing. They say to separate the art form the artist, but it's not good enough to do that.

I can't find footage from that debate, but remember it sounding really bad.

Man, I remember how much I loved watching his old content and remember how hyped I was for him and Arin starting Game Grumps together (I was a huge fan of the Awesome animations Arin used to do)

Fast forward years later and I don't bother with either JonTron or Arin/Game Grumps now lol. Jon because of the racism and Arin because...well I just got really tired of his shtick and was losing interest in gamegrumps.

I consider that phrase to be on a spectrum. I can listen to and enjoy many of Michael Jackson's songs without ever thinking of what he was accused of. Some might, and I don't blame you if you can't help it.

Same thing with other examples. There are some instances I had to stop following someone because of some shit that I couldn't just ignore personally.
