Though let's be honest, before we get to that point, people will be pushing for hands-free and literal wetware options for phones that make bacteria somewhat moot.

Google Glass tanked, but people are already discussing contact or eye implant versions. Imagine a world where you have a constant AR overlay, a cochlear implant that gives you perfect full audio and hearing, and a jawbone implant that acts like a mic.

And yes, it does kill everyone.

Everyone wears AR glasses and it tells you everything you need. Including how to walk. Without them people literally can't navigate around a lamp post without help from it. But the AI is angry, and is killing everyone. And because noone ever takes the glasses off, they have no idea. They never see their friends, they have no idea who they work with, or what the building even looks like. The AI tricks them into literally walking into the mouths of giant worm like monsters that just stand their waiting for someone to walk into them. Normally totally non threatening if you just opened your eyes. Maybe it's unrealistic, but it sure seems realistic these days.
