All because you got tired of them. Shelters are full...rescues are full because of you people. While people who have legitimate reasons to surrender a pet such as health, etc, are getting turned away. It's frustrating

Shelters are full because people don't spay/neuter their pets. No other reason. That's all.

Its shitty that they adopted one to begin with if they had such a low level of commitment. Its not like buying a shirt and then deciding you dont like the fit.

Oh I agree with you there, but it's not like forcing them to keep unwanted pets is a good outcome either.

I work at a wildlife sanctuary that explicitly only takes in injured or sick native wildlife but we almost daily have someone calling or coming in to ask if we can make an exception for their dog. Some people have legitimate reasons - we are, after all, in some shitty times - but most of it just comes down to a series of poor decisions and plain ol' selfishness.

My current doggy needed to be rehomed since the elderly lady who owned her before me ended up having to go into a nursing home and absolutely did not want her dog going to the shelter for fear shed be put to sleep thanks to the overabundance of Covid pets being dumped on the animal shelters.

Thankfully my old dog Nacho happened to be on his deathbed at that point in time and my parents set up an appointment with the animal rescue organization as a surprise since they didnt want me to be overcome with grief and loneliness right after he passed away, so it all worked out in the end.

They could at least make the effort to find a decent home personally for the pet.

As someone who has volunteered in shelters around the world for 30 years, turning them in to a no kill is better than turning them loose in the wild to fend for themselves. It sucks, they're scared, but at least they're safe. I read a story once about a family who surrendered their dog and then a month later went back to the same shelter to get a different dog. Fuck that.

It does happen sadly. Best case the dog is retrieved safely and the family is noted to not be allowed to adopt anymore.

what's a covid pet? like, a pet that someone got to keep them company during the lockdown? like how people got tons of dalmations after 101 dalmations came out?

My dogs were my whole world for just over 13 years. Legit only had 1 single night where we weren't together and that was when my boy got neutered and my girl got spayed and they had to stay overnight at the vets office and I picked them up the next morning.

When the vet called and said I could pick them up anytime before 1700 I was up there right away 10 minutes later early in the morning.

I never did anything without my dogs. 13 years we did every single activity together and were never apart. I legitimately cared for my dogs more than humans.

The only circumstances I can understand surrendering a pet is when you are in a position you simply CAN'T take care of them and know they are better off without you but in those rare circumstances the people I have known in this position found a replacement home on their own and didn't give them up to a shelter. They wanted to verify they were going to the right home.

I wish more people treated pets like family but sadly many don't.

It's weird that so many people aren't aware that there was a sharp increase in pet adoption IE "COVID pets" during the pandemic because they were stuck at home and lonely. It's a real thing. I don't know how many of them were returned, haven't seen raw numbers, however no doubt there is at least a large enough amount to discuss and TC is addressing the people who selfishly only got these pets because they were stuck inside and lonely and then dumped them when "the world opened back up".

I agree with them, a pet should be a commitment and considered a part of the family, not some property you donate or throw away when you're bored with it.

You have no idea what their level of commitment was like before and after covid though. Shit happens that they might have to get rid of them because they couldn't afford to keep it anymore because of unforeseen circumstances
