I read it in 5th grade because my dad gave me his copy and was like "I read this in 5th grade now it is your turn" It was fun. The thing I most remember is the part where Gandalf speaks for a long time about the war when Bilbo had passed out, because it taught me that paragraphs of dialogue start with a quote mark on each paragraph but don't add end quotes. Because Gandalf talked for so long. lol --- https://imgur.com/gallery/dXDmJHw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75GL-BYZFfY ... Copied to Clipboard!

I read the first couple chapters not long ago (don't know why I paused). Chapter 1 was a lot more difficult to follow than I remember as a kid, lol. The prose is DENSE and the way sentences flow is kinda flowery and roundabout. I read it in 8th grade and thought it was just okay. I read LotR after and enjoyed it more, though I still thought it was a struggle at times. I reread it about a year ago and really enjoyed it. My two most memorable takeaways from the reread were A) the eagles themselves pretty much put to bed the whole "why didn't the eagles just.." debate the first time they appeared by eloquently telling the party that they're not a fucking taxi service, and B) the extreme commitment to PoV narrative to the point where --- Simple questions deserve long-winded answers that no one will bother to read. ... IMO... LotR movie trilogy = The Hobbit book > LotR book trilogy > The Hobbit movie trilogy. Anyone remember the Fellowship of the Ring for the SNES? People said it was bad, but I enjoyed it.
