Just recently got my first 4k tv, so I'm still adjusting to the fact that I have options now when gaming. I made this topic particularly in reference to FF7 Rebirth (which I am currently playing) but this applies generally to all games.

I think i prefer performance, as it plays well with combat. But then I occasionally switch to graphics mode when in cities/towns and am blown away. I'm sure this varies from game to game, and genre to genre. Just curious what everyone else's preference is.

Performance, always. I barely notice graphical differences in Graphics Mode.

Performance every single time. As someone who grew up on Atari, graphics for me have been good enough and outright impressing me for awhile. It always amuses me the amount of people who try to say how so many awesome games look like shit when I think they look incredible.

Give me that performance.

Sure on some games in fine details I can see differences when focusing on them and looking for them with the increased resolution but thats mostly standing still and really focusing. When Im actually just playing normally with action on the screen? In most scenarios I dont see the graphical difference but Ill always see the frame rate differences.

Performance.

I got a new TV in the middle of playing this. Upgraded from a 5 year old Bravia to a good Samsung OLED.

The TV upgrade did so much more for me. Even on performance, the graphics are still pretty stunning. Can be a bit fuzzy sometimes, but a very pretty game regardless of settings

I played it in performance. Toggled it a couple times and I didn't see a significant difference to justify half the frames

Performance and I wish more console games gave you those kind of options.

On PC I always turn things down or like turn off shadows and water effects. I don't like the idea of the machine working so hard it has to turn up the fans. Playing MGS V on PS3 made me start putting the thing up vertically so it had more air flow.

Performance for FF7 rebirth in particular. The hit to resolution quality isn't something I really notice much. (Like I can tell its there, but it def. doesn't bother me kinda' thing).

I have a samsung 65 inch QN90B which does a pretty good job with scaling (it helped cover up the FF7 rebirth fuzziness some people might complain about when played in performance mode), but for games like FF7 remake+rebirth performance is more important to me since I can easily notice the difference between that and fidelity.

There is certain games where I was fine using the 40fps VRR mode like with ratchet and clank rift apart when that got patched in, but for gameplay heavy games like spider-man 2 for example I go for the medium 60fps+resolution option over the 30fps fidelity and 120fps 1080 settings.

Performance

I went thru quite a few changes to get it looking as good as possible tho

Managed to get it relatively crispy where it counts but also 60. 4K mode still looks better of course

HOWEVER, Remake Performance looks better than Rebirth Graphics. You should try looking into that TC

Now that I think about it, the performance of PS4 Remake has better frame pacing than Intergrade and Rebirth Graphics.

Seriously I could pop in PS4 Remake and the 30fps looks solid, but going to graphics mode on the other hurts my eyes cuz it looks like it's stuttering

If you have demon's souls thats a good PS5 game to use if you checkin' out a new TV's scaling and HDR capabilities.

Boot it up, go to stonefang tunnel smithing grounds and just stare at that awesome sunset.

Go to the underground temple boss room and lookit all that red with the HDR hopefully giving you a good contrast in there.

Then just warp over to the tower of latria, the upper latria bonfire/whatever you call it and stare at all that.....darkness and ominous lit towers.

This is me. Theres a lot of younger people thatll Ill hear say bad graphics takes them out of the game and weve admittedly had different growing up experiences but there are no current graphics issues that my imagination cant compensate for.

If your Tv offers a dynamic mode (the one that makes things run at smoother framerates and adds more color), it works wonders for FF7. You can run the game at 60fps and it fixes the ugly colors from the default game. Really enhanced the experience for me.

It doesnt work for all things, but for 3d games it is a great boost,

Normally I max graphics and then go from there if it's running poorly. My PC is good enough to max most games at 1440p, and I don't have a 4k monitor/tv.

60fps is plenty for a game to run smoothly. It starts having that uncanny valley effect when you push it much further.

Performance.

If performance vs fidelity was 60fps vs 120fps instead of the current 30fps vs 60fps, i might chose differently, but 60fps is too important for me, whenever its an option.

60fps has been the standard for consoles since the Nintendo 64, iirc.

Far earlier than that, but that got abandoned in the 3D era on the consoles.

Mostly performance but certain games I do quality. Space marine 2 and FF16 are two games that come to mind. SM2 isn't stable and has fps fluctuations during large swarms (which is often) and FF16 looked like a Vaseline smeared shit box.
