I feel like before long, the desktop space and the console space will both be dominated by ARM. Only Windows machines will still be using x86.

So like.. are they intentionally trying to make the PS5 pro a failure? Because I would think following up a disastrous launch announcement with another one that you've secured contracts for your follow-up console seems like a great way to tell everyone to not even bother with the pro.

Until there's good x86-on-ARM emulation, Steam Deck type devices will also remain x86. Once there is, I suspect Windows will make the move too.

But I also suspect AMD will start making ARM chips by that point.

They're gonna have to. And Intel, too.

I could see Intel getting stubborn and refusing to change, at least not until it's too late to keep their dominant position. I don't see AMD doing the same.

I mean, look at how long it took for Intel to seriously enter the GPU space...

AMD can't make ARM chips. ARM is proprietary. A more likely scenario is that they make chipsets that support RISC-V and since ARM chips can also support RISC-V it shouldn't be that difficult to add compatibility wrappers.

That's not really what happened though. Max Cherney at Rueters had sources that said Intel lost their bid for the PS5 back in 2022. That's where this story is coming from. This is just an Intel dogpile story, not a Sony announcement story.

Sure they can; they'll just pay a royalty on them. ARM has always licensed them.

It takes like 3 years to prototype, produce, and have games ready for a new console. They are probably gonna use this year's current mid range laptop models for the chips but that's just a guess.

It'll be custom. But I'd guess Zen 5 + RDNA4 if they're starting work now. Although maybe they'll just repurpose a Strix Halo chip.

No, this is just around the time that contracts like this need to be written up. This really means nothing to most people and don't expect it to be big news.

The Custom CPUs in the PS5/XSX are widely regarded to be spec for spec a Ryzen 7 3700X. That released in July of 2019. The consoles came out in November 2020. I think your guess is way off.

Ryzen 7 was in 2017. The 3700X may have debuted at a later date but the consoles aren't using literal 3700X cards. They're custom jobs built with the current chipsets.

Sony already announced they aren't launching a successor until at least 2028. And these negotiations started in 2022.

Curious if the 10th generation will even happen at this point, or if theyll just basically become specialty branded computers. Other than Nintendo, nobody has any worthwhile franchises that are exclusive to consoles, and I cant imagine that they will stop PC support.

PS4 Pro released in 2016 so the PS6 coming out in 2028 would be a similar time frame.

You don't know what you're talking about about. The 3700X was Zen 2, and it came out in 2019, not 2017(Zen 1). And no one said they were literally that, I said they were custom chips(it was the second word in my post) and they are widely regarded as being spec for spec with a 3700X.

Elder Scrolls 6 has literally nothing to do with the topic at hand. It's coming regardless of what hardware exists.
