I was doing fine until the vet started crying heavily, and that sorta broke my heart. She does this for a living. She explained that she also volunteers at animal shelters and she wishes every dog there could have the life he did. I got him when he was about 3 months old from a shelter and he lived a great life for nearly 13 years.

As soon as I saw her blubbering, I couldn't help but break down. I'd come to terms with this a month back and it'd been good and bad days since. My biggest thing was I knew I'd dwell on whether I put him down too early, but she explained he likely had intestinal problems, possibly cancer, and was struggling to absorb the right chemicals from food, so he was never getting better. That helped me a lot. I just didn't want to regret removing even an additional day or week from him.

He was my good buddy. When I'd shout Touchdown! he'd run in, put his paw up to high 5 me. Football will be tough without him.

Anyway, a parting word, a pet is only around for so many years of your life, but you're around their entire life. Give them all the love in the world so it's all they ever know.

Im saddened to hear that, TC. My last dog was having his organs shut down and I had the option of having him put to sleep, but both me and my vet agreed to bring him home and let him pass naturally while surrounded by everybody he cared about.

Before anyone asks, she give me medicine to help him feel at ease and not in pain, and we spent his last week just chilling on the bed where he loved to be most days just watching television and playing video games.

I still miss him dearly, but I know hes no longer suffering and he was happy to have lived a long life being loved and cared for.

Edit: Sorry for rambling on about my furry friend in your topic, TC. I didnt mean to try and take away from your own grief.

Thats a great looking dog. You gave him a good home and a good life. You should be proud of that. He had his time. That said, this is still a painful experience and Im sorry for your loss.

Ive also seen my dog get put down, and I admit Im surprised yours started crying, because ours was gentle and professional as they tried to comforted me and my family. I guess even vets can get emotional. Not sure why I thought otherwise.

Been through this a few weeks ago with my pet cat that we had for 8 years. It's absolutely devastating and I hope you are able to take the time to get through this and heal.

My heart goes out to you man. Saying goodbye to such a loyal, loving part of your family is soul destroying.

Rest in peace, beautiful pup.

Very sorry

I had the same problem putting down my cat that I thought it might have been too early. I went through a reddit thread from someone with the same concerns and it was full of people that said they waited too long and it's always better to be a bit early than even a little too late when they're really suffering or die in pain by themselves in the middle of the night.

Yea, it was just heartbreaking to me. Even nearly a week later now, I feel like I could have taken him to the beach tomorrow.

My biggest problem is he never really made much sounds, he never whimpered, whined, barely barked unless it was critters or his nemesis cats down the street on walks, so it never seemed like he was in pain or suffering, he just got more lethargic and had heavy diarrhea a few times a week, but that was it.

So I just never knew if he was suffering or not. He'd still have ahuge smile on his face when he'd go for walks or get a treat. I know that's not always happiness with a dog, but you could tell when he was happy, that's why his name was Joker.

But I have no regrets. As I said, when she told me he likely wouldn't have had much longer anyway, it put my mind to ease. I just get bummed out when I look over towards his bed and he's not there. It was especially hard Sunday with Football, as when I'd cheer he'd come over and celebrate with me, knowing I'd shower him in treats.

I'm sad that you also went through the same second guessing and hope you had closure too so it's not a lasting regret.

I took my other dog in with me when I put him down, so she'd see him die and not just think he was gone and was coming back. She seems to give zero fucks that he's gone, or she knew the writing was on the wall. She did lay next to him for a couple final minutes, but she got up once they started doing it and refused to look back at him, so maybe she knew what was happening, idk. She seems happy to go for solo walks now, even if it's somewhat hard for me. I'm used to doing twists and turns and pausing every 5 feet as one stops to sniff/piss/stare at something.

I'm sorry Clay. I've done this 3 times. All dogs. Last one was so hard. She was 20. That was unusual for a boxer lab mix. Her kidneys started to fail and had to be picked up and stood up to go pee. I didnt want to let her go.

Sorry TC. Losing a pet is the worst part of the contract we sign up for when we bring them into our lives. My cat is turning sixteen in a few months and I know the day is coming closer and closer and that makes me sad.

But remember the good times and the love you both shared for each other and in time maybe you can share some of that love again with another contract. Sorry for your loss

(This is copy pasted from the other dog loss topic cause I meant to post this here and then ended up over there. I have covid so I blame my brain)

We put our cat of nearly 19 years (only had her for the last two, my wife had her for the first five, long story) but the guilt of doing it still weighs heavy on my heart. She had mouth cancer and didn't eat for weeks and she was so skinny and tiny but still a ball of love. My wife picked her up and she was sneezing and coughing and I couldn't take it, we went to put her to sleep right after despite having an at home vet signed up to do it a few days later. I just couldn't stand seeing her struggle to move and stumble so I made the call.

Still makes me tear up thinking about it.

Fucking Christ this is my biggest fear. Im so sorry. We cremate all of our animals and get them a nice urn and a print of their paws and noses so we always have some part of them with us.

I pray to a god I dont believe in for natural deaths for them all. If I have to make the decision for my dog Im going to be a wreck for months.
