Did not realize Japan still had an Emperor. I assume it is mostly symbolic like the royal family in England. Saw a news article in my feed saying the first male heir in four decades has reached adulthood. Apparently they are suffering from the same issues as the rest of Japan, declining birth rates. --- My head's not torn off, my sunglasses aren't broken. Amen, hallelujah, peanut butter. ... [LFAQs-redacted-quote] Yeah, the Japanese Emperors and their courts have pretty much always been secluded, at least for the last millenium or so. That's why that famous picture of MacArthur and Hirohito after the surrender was so significant; it was the very first time that most people anywhere (including in Japan) had seen a Japanese Emperor...and he was standing in deference to his victorious adversary. --- http://i.imgur.com/0APl48O.gifv ... Their transition back and forth from Imperial rule to Military rule is interesting. The Sengoku ended with the Shogun being the ruler, Ieyasu Tokugawa. There was a lot of conflict during the Bakumatsu between the Shinsengumi (military samurai) and the groups of Restorationist Ishin Shishi. The ended with the Meiji Restoration. That ended with the end of World War 2. --- "You're made of spare parts, aren't ya, bud?" ... Copied to Clipboard!

Yeah, the Japanese Emperors and their courts have pretty much always been secluded, at least for the last millenium or so.Hirohito's radio broadcast to announce the surrender of Japan was the first time that basically anyone in Japan had even heard him speak.
