Fucking love the original. I know its blasphemous to many but Id legitimately rather replay the original than Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. I love those old 2D style dungeons from the original. Not a fan of the modern direction. I think Zelda peaked on the GameCube.

I want another 2D game. Give me another A Link to the Past.

But yeah The Legend of Zelda rules. Takes me right back to being 11 years old in 1987 every time. Great memories. A lot of my fondest memories fall in that 1987-1990 time frame on a bunch of different NES games.

My bad, I thought we were talking about the genre, and vote yes.

I love the genre...... except LoZ 1 and 2. Literally the only 2 Zelda games I've never beaten and no plan to.

Yeah, it's still a good game. Some aspects have aged, but even today it's fun to play. That's not true for some other NES games, like the original Metroid.

Yes, but only with a guide or some other form of prior knowledge. Too many hidden things (some of which are required to beat the game) to be a pleasant experience without it; there is otherwise a lot of stumbling around and accomplishing fuck all.

Not really, no.

It's fun for a short time but the lack of direction kills it.

I suppose many a kid in 1986 who had hours a day of spare time and three total video games probably enjoyed wandering around aimlessly, eventually stumbling upon all the temples and eventually discovering that completing them all unlocks some kind of endgame thingy (I dunno, I've still never beaten the game).

But that has never been my thing, even when I did have tons of spare time.

it was the first video game I ever played

I don't think it's as directionless as some people like to say, except I guess in the second quest. the dungeons basically all have hints in them pointing toward the next one, the dungeons themselves all have a map that you can combine with a bit of your own map drawing skills if you need more detail, and most of the really hidden stuff is just extra money or whatever

the combat's surprisingly snappy too considering almost all enemies are just variants of run around and try to bump into player

Of course, you say that with the knowledge that dungeons exist.

Mine didn't come with one.

Normally that wouldn't be Nintendo's fault, but in this case it is because it's the Zelda Game & Watch.

If you bought the cartridge back in the day you got a manual that helped you get started but I'm sure a lot of people's first experience with the game was playing the ROM on an emulator and in that case I can see it being a pretty confusing game if you don't actively seek out a guide online.

Yeah you're really missing a lot of stuff in games from those eras without the manual. The big one is the controls, since most games often don't explain those ingame at all (fortunately the games are usually straightforward enough you can just press random buttons and figure it out). But also usually the entire story is in there, the explanations of items that get no tutorials otherwise, maps of early areas, gameplay tips, explanation of the gameplay and goal... it goes on and on

It's sort of unfortunate from the logistics perspective since as you say a lot of people won't have access to a manual, or might not even know one existed. But honestly it's almost like skipping the tutorial for a game and then complaining the game doesn't tell you how to play

The first three dungeons are not difficult to find with a bit of exploration. They're just kinda sitting out there.

Anyone who's actually played this will know they are not what warrants a guide.
