Finally watched it, and as someone who typically enjoys most Studio Ghibli films, this one felt extremely underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, the animation quality was as fantastical as always and I think they did a wonderful job building the world and settings. However from a narrative standpoint, I felt it fell very flat. Both myself and my gf thought "wtf did we just watch" once the credits started rolling. Like the themes were very clear; coming of age, embracing change, loss, grief, letting go and saying goodbye yada yad yada. It still just felt... very poorly put together. The pacing.. there was just something about it that made it hard to follow in an engaging way. Some of the dialogue felt forced and lacking in explanation. I understand the film made a major shift mid production because of the death of Takahato and it's supposed to be a more personal film than other Ghibli films, but I don't think it absolves it from any of the flaws. Just seemed way too forced, not quite pretentious, but contrived to the point where it didn't have much of a flow. I honestly don't get the hype. I was expecting more from the "best animated film of 2024". This isn't even the best Miyazaki film, let alone best Ghibli. On the contrary, I'd say it's one of the bottom tier ones just a couple of spots above Tales from Earthsea --- Enter the baller zone: http://error1355.com/ce/Gurifisu.html ... Copied to Clipboard!

I remember doing a bit of research after first watching it (was originally a bit confused) and it's quite deep in terms of including many underlying allegories and characters relating to Miyazaki's own life (one major theme being a journey to overcome grief/trauma).
