I'm not even that serious about it, but my partner is.

This is her life:
  • buys all her clothes and appliances second hand
  • doesn't use Amazon
  • opts for Fair trade or similar wherever possible
  • doesn't buy most household or vanity cleaning agents
  • doesn't get plastic bags or really plastic anything
  • Has to research companies before she buys things to see whether they treat their employees like crap or exploit animals or whatever
Therefore most of the time doesn't buy things and when she does, it's crap.

That's the worst part for me. I can get over the rest of it, but you know how fucking hard it is to clean the kitchen with homemade vinegar products? ffs

If youre doing all that stuff and youre happy, I guess nothing wrong with it, but if youre making yourself miserable doing it, sounds mostly performative. The impact from that will be extraordinarily negligible, so hurting your mental health over it isnt worth it.

I really admire it tbh. She's not even grandstanding on it, she doesn't really tell people at all. She just gets on with it.

But every decision she makes is pretty much vetted through Ethical consumer:

Ah man, these are pretty rough not going to lie.

There is just those things like the toilet and bathtub you need a good cleaner with a bit of bleach in it for, and the great value walmart one is cheap and dammit it works.

Has she heard of Blueland? A few of the podcasts I listen to tout it as a product aiming at eco-friendly cleaning supplies, sold in ultra concentrated formulas/pressed powder brickettes/etc to try to cut down on transport/plastic waste. Beyond that though I don't know if they are as ethical as they claim to be.

It's impossible. Human suffering is always somewhere in the chain, no matter where you go and what you do. It is not the individual responsibility of every person to minimize the harm they benefit from, it is the responsibility of all of us to force our governments and regulators to stop allowing products of child slavery to be sold, and to stop slavery and exploitation around the world.

I do some of the things in the OP. I still use Amazon though a lot less in the last couple years, and I don't really research companies, but I also try to buy a lot of stuff second hand which would mean I don't necessarily need to research for a second hand product.

I think it's admirable that she does this. Quietly getting on with doing what she feels is right.

Calling it 'performative', or pointing out that she's not going to save the planet by herself is being a dick and showing a limited understanding.

This topic isnt what I thought it was. I thought this was a topic about (I guess responsible?) consumerism, where people are mindful of their money and choose which businesses they do and dont support. Thats the lynchpin of capitalism that our spoiled country has ignored for decades, because were bloated with excess and can throw money at even the worst businesses. Then we vocally complain about how horrible it is as we open our wallets, and blame the magical capitalist gods for taking advantage of our eagerness to bathe them in the sweat of our labor.

That got pretty negative. Good on your partner, and yes it is exhausting. If we werent all so damned tired more of us would do it. But capitalism wins when were apathetic.

Hit the nail on the head.

IMO where you choose to spend your money has a more lasting impact than who you vote for. Obviously vote ethically, but think of spending like voting with your wallet. You do it literally every single day. Then those same companies either invest in their workers, or in lobbyists.

If you get all your needs from begging off other people, then you aren't directly tied into the chain of human suffering caused by consumption. Just make sure that it's something they already have on hand and not something you ask them to purchase for you. Buddhist monks already figured this out.
