It's better in 2, but in 1 your Sword/Shield/Staff choice can be kinda major. It's not like you can't work around it, but wow does getting Guard/Leaf Bracer/Second Chance late kind of really suck. On the other hand, getting the extra MP from the Staff is literally irreplaceable, whereas at least everything else you give up can be gotten eventually with enough time. Although, on Proud Mode, I found myself doing a quite a lot of level grinding to get my HP up as soon as possible. I would even recommend moving on to the next world if Cerberus is too much.
