With the FF9 remake expected to be announced in the coming years, the internet is abuzz with FF talk. Which of the single-player titles is the best IYO?

My list is

7 > 4 > 10 > 6 > 9 > 1 > 13 > 3 > 5 > 2 > 4AY, 8

Haven't beaten 102, 12, 13-2, 13-3, 15, 16 or Tactics.

Completely pulling this outta my ass, but I'd imagine it's mostly the same story, but on a newer engine, better visuals, QoL updates, new features, and hopefully a way to recruit Beatrix permanently.
I'd also hope it's not done in 3 parts like 7R.

To me OG VII, X, and Tactics are my top 3 in no particular order. Those are my favorites.

I think VI and IX are very good. Honestly VI through X was a HELL of a run where the only dud to me was VIII. I know it has its fans but I dislike it.

Everything after Squaresoft merged with Enix I havent really cared about and the series is no longer for me since XV. The only FF game that has felt like an actual FF game to me since the merger is World of Final Fantasy. I liked that.

Ive always heard a lot of positive things about the online games to be fair but I dont play online games really.

I started the series in the summer of 1990 on NES just a couple months before I started high school. So I started with the very 1st game at 14 years old so VII wasnt my first FF game or babys first rpg. I still think its one of the greatest games ever.

FFT 4 Lyfe

FF8, loved the whole cast of characters and story.

My Top 3.

1. VI had a great cast of characters, charming pixel art, possibly the best soundtrack in the franchise, a great villain, a coherent story, and some fun side quests.
2. Tactics also had a great plot and cast of characters, a great soundtrack, and excellent gameplay. I could honestly make this and VI 1a and 1b.
3. VII hasn't aged as well as the two previous games, but it did a lot right with some of its characters its world building, its gameplay, and its side quests.

Edit: Honorable mention is IX, which I think would edge VII out for the third slot in my Top 3 if half its playable characters weren't largely irrelevant.

7 will always be my favourite with 9 being a very close second.

From what I've played so far.

14 > 6 > 10 > 7 > 9 > 16 > 12 > 5 > 15 > 4 > 8

Not including side games or sequels.

6 and 9 are peak.

For me it's 8.

6 and 9 run it incredibly close, though.

I said 6 for years, but having replayed both recently, I have to give it to 9. VI while still a great game, feels it's age. 9 is an amazing game that doesn't remotely feel it's age. It is much more timeless.

I found it the least enjoyable of the PS1 main trio of Final Fantasy games. Among so many other issues like Trance being poorly thought out and the awful art style, the card game having a strict 100 card limit and being a step down from Triple Triad killed most of my interest in playing it.

I also feel like 6 has aged a bit, although I still find it the most enjoyable of the mainline Final Fantasy games. The best entries are, oddly enough, the spinoffs like Bravely Default/Second and Octopath Traveler imo. The latter being a spiritual successor to FF6 shows what 6 could be with some modern touchup if done right tough.
