When X censored political opposition in Turkey and India, Musk claimed he had to follow local laws.

Now Brazil asks X to follow local laws, and Musk's refusing, claiming it's because free speech.

It's not free speech, it's does he like you, and no one should pretend otherwise.

Hopefully this starts a domino effect of twitter bans (besides the VPN thing, that shouldn't be replicated because it's a bad precedent).

Give it five years and soon it will spread all over the world. Companies don't like VPNs. Governments don't like them unless they're the ones using it. It as well as stuff like adblock and other stuff will be illegal and criminalized.

The actual reason, if you look at the fundamental aspects on a non-partisan basis, is that X refused to ban the accounts of the ruling party's political opposition, and while X tried to argue their case in court:

I tried to look this up; it seems X was asked to block accounts from people who were apologists for the military dictatorship that happened in Brazil between 64 and 85, who made threats against figures in power/authority?

Now that I think about it, how will the Brazilian government even know if the VPN usage is linked to Twitter?

Doesn't that, y'know, kinda defeat the entire purpose of a VPN?

I tried to look this up; it seems X was asked to block accounts from people who were apologists for the military dictatorship that happened in Brazil between 64 and 85, who made threats against figures in power/authority? and/or violent speech against Supreme Justices, who spread fake news and hate speech, other claims include fraud, obstruction of justice and corruption of minors (presumably the idea was to have minors post things they knew were criminal, because the minors wouldn't be punished for such posts).
Most of the affected people were influencers and businessmen, but one was a senator whose assets were partially frozen as a result of his actions.

I find it really fucking stupid that of all things Brazil could import from the US, it was a cult to personality similar to Trump's, but sure enough the Bolsonaristas are there to act like that absolute imbecile is God's gift to humanity. It still annoys me that we even had our own goddamn version of the January 6 invasion of Capitol (even happened on a pretty close date, January 8)
