The logic is that competition drives people to be better. In Businsess/ sport etc. By having events were everyone gets rewarded no matter how badly they perform, that encourages people not to try harder and improve themselves to win next time. The only thing worth doing in life is dominating others and the number one thing worth derision is claiming to have value when you didn't win. Their argument is that if you give someone a participation trophy it's celebrating a lack of achievement and gives people an overinflated sense of self worth/success that they haven't yet worked to deserve. Which sounds fine in theory but anyone who has received a participation trophy will attest to how patronising and humiliating it is. It's like someone shining a light on how poorly you did. I've never really liked participation trophies, personally, but I think right-wing hate is misdirected, as it often is, towards the recipients, when I'm positive that they are exactly the kind of people/parents who demanded trophies for their kids to begin with. As a less-than-gifted athlete whose parents signed him up for every single sports program offered by the town we lived in, no one enjoys receiving the pity/you're-not-good-enough-for-anything-else-even-most-improved trophy, and I'm certainly not the one who wanted that to be a thing. --- Thus I became a madman. ...
