Conservatives are raging over the arrival of a 90-foot tall statue of Hanuman, a Hindu deity that is half-human and half-monkey, in Texas.

The massive statue was raised on August 15 at Sugar Land's Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple, according to local NBC affiliate KCEN. Hindus consider Hanuman an immortal being known for his devotion to the Hindu god Rama and virtues like self-control.

The Texas Hanuman figure, officially titled the "Statue of Union," is now reportedly the third tallest statue in the continental U.S., trailing only the 151-foot tall Statue of Liberty in New York and the 110-foot tall Pegasus and Dragon statue in Hallandale Beach, Florida.

Conservatives, particularly those identifying themselves as Christians, quickly lashed out at images and videos of the statue, with some claiming that the figure was "demonic."

While a number of conservatives mocked the statue and falsely claimed that it represents a demon, Hanuman is considered to be an important and non-demonic figure to devoted Hindus.

"For devotees and truth seekers, Hanuman represents acharya who connects a soul with the forgotten identity," a page on the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple website reads. "The identity is: A soul is always subservient to God, not independent of God."

"Hanuman utilises his knowledge, wit, values, qualities, appearance and all his skills to overcome any kind of hurdle in bridging the gap between a suffering soul (Sitha) and longing Lord (Sri Rama)," it continues.

That is pretty badass.

That's a pretty cool statue. Good on the Hindus for that. We need more non Christian groups to put up statues, I'm tired of all the gaudy Christian bullshit plus it makes conservatives cry when other religions put up monuments. So a win win for me.

When I was in high school some hippie looking guy came up to me and gave me a book that I think was supposed to be hinduism, I never read it but I think I still have it.

Id love to see a city with a blend of this kind of thing with modern architecture and classical western looking monuments.

Pretty ugly statue, but it's also cool in its scale and design. Just the texture makes it look a bit gaudy. Like a plastic gold lamp.

I mean, it certianly seems wasteful, but I don't see why it's a problem apart from that.

Its at Gulfstream Park, a horse racing track. From what I have heard the owner of the track was in a billionaire dick measuring contest with the owner of one of the other tracks in South Florida and spent an insane amount when they were improving Gulfstream. It does look pretty awesome though.

Are they gonna put the fountains in like the concept design pic? I really like the framing with those in there. On its own, it's okay enough but I feel like it's really elevated with the extra stuff. I'm also curious to see the lighting setup for nighttime. They could do some super cool shit with that alone

Yeah. It is at the entrance. You have to pass it to get into the parking lots and can walk around it freely.

I've been to gulfstream and saw the statue in person. It really is super fucking awesome looking haha. Also, the base of the pegasus, that big rock he's standing on, is actually a building. It's staff only though so I imagine it's some sort of utility room, but it's still hype.
