It's on Pluto (I think that's what it's called) so I can't do it in one sitting because of ads. So I'm like a third of the way through right now, lol.

Anyway. How does "What we do in life echoes in eternity" get completely forgotten as one of the great film quotes? It's a really nice, succinct statement of the film's thesis right at the start, and the writers did really nice work putting it in context.

I do kinda feel like Act 1 was oddly rushed. Wouldn't mind seeing a director's cut or something that expands on the minor characters.

Also cool how Commodus is totally right about his dad. It's interesting because we can see it from both perspectives at once: the father who wouldn't accept his son, and also the son who wouldn't be taught by his father. He did kinda do the wrong thing by killing him though.

Anyway. Good movie.

As much as I love this movie, I don't know if I'll look at it the same after watching Ralphie fanboying over it on The Sopranos.

I highly enjoy the movie. I mean even before the movie my entire life I have really been into this type of stuff and eat up any media I can about it. I have actually been in Rome and been in the Colosseum. i was obsessed with that stuff as a kid. So I won't go into a whole movie breakdown but yes I love it and I rewatch it usually a couple times every year. It's incomprehensible to me though someone would forget Joaquin Phoenix was in it and his performance though.

I got home from the Navy in 99 and when I was in the Navy when we were in port I used to go to the base movie theatre every week. I would watch basically every movie that came out just to get off the ship when I could. When I first got home I didn't have a big incentive to go to the movie theatre but I remember when this movie was coming out I went to the theatre and watched it. It was the first movie to bring me to the theatre since I had been back home the previous year.

Not to get too far off subject but I loved when Starz made Spartacus Blood and Sand 10 years later. That first season was simply brilliant. The prequel was brilliant too when they were waiting to see if the main actor Andy Whitfield would recover his health. Sadly he didn't. I didn't care for season 2 or 3 nearly as much not just because of the actor switch but once they moved away from Capua and the Ludus under Batiatus it was a different show.

Also, a completely different portion of history but as someone who grew up obsessed with Greek mythology and the stories and read stuff like the Iliad and the Odyssey for pleasure and not for school in 2004 I fucking loved Troy.

I just love those large scale historical movies. Stuff like Braveheart, Gladiator, Troy and so on. All brilliant movies. I got carried away here.

I rented this movie when I was still working at Blockbuster and I got bored of it like 10 minutes in. One of the very rare times I completely lost interest in a movie I was actively watching.

Comodous was a bastard, no mistake, but it stings that he pours his heart out to Marcus Aurelius and the best he can offer in return is "yeah sorry I fucked up raising you, son".

Best part of the movie was the first act in Germania

Oddly enough, my first time watching it, the same thing happened to me. I dunno if it was just that the opening battle had no context (except for the text right at the start) or what but I just sorta shrugged it off as generic historical war film.

For some reason, though, I decided to rewatch and after getting through the intro battle the movie immediately becomes pure gold.

Well, I didn't forget the character or the performance. I just never bothered to look up the actor's name when I watched it 20 or so years ago, lol.

My memory of it is that I didn't really like it, but thinking back on what I remember of it, it all seems pretty good, so maybe I need to rewatch it.

The trailer for the sequel looks like absolute garbage, though.

Its alright. Nowhere near the masterpiece its still considered by some people but mostly entertaining. The sequel looking like doo doo though. I like how the trailer for it and that peacock show are basically the same.

It's an all time favorite of mine, since childhood, so idc. It taught me about Stoicism and a lot of the early segments with Richard Harris are incredible. Soundtrack rules.

I have some gripes with it, it isn't a perfect movie, but it's in my top ten.
