Everything is all just plans made by the goddess. Trials set by the goddess. Messages and memories activated by the goddess. Link basically dances for Hylia for 20 hours.

And why did the goddess make a magical sword but not finish it?? Seems like making the magic fires and their temples would be a lot more effort than just forging the sword right there and then.

Pretty much none of the plot makes any sense outwith "it's what the goddess planned". Why did she plan it? Why did she hide clawshots behind a spiritual growth exercise? Why did she make the isle of songs, which is just for the sole purpose of reactivating memories in Fi, so she can teach link songs to open trials to get items to get to a flame to forge a sword that she could have forged in the first place? Why do any of this?? Fuck you Hylia.

Why? A sword needs a wielder, and the Master Sword needs a Master. If the Goddess made it they would have to come fight evil all the time instead of her dancing stooge linkypoo.

The bigger problem is that everyone except Impa had the face of a wax statue prominently featured in the internationally-renowned Museum of Punchable Faces.

BotW made Zelda the absolute center of the universe, even to the point that Link's flashbacks are almost all about her. And apparently TotK just goes ass-first into retcon land. I'll take what SS did.

skyward sword is also extremely boring and uninteresting, so, worst story makes sense

story is ok to me. but I will say I feel the presentation of the story felt better to me than a typical zelda game.

How was she "the centre of the universe"? The story was about her but the events that made her important didn't feel arbitrary or nonsensical to me.

Initially that's what the series was supposed to be. Well, first game maybe not so much, they chose the name because it sounded like a cool name for a fantasy game, but in the very second game they put a reason to the name by having the plot literally be about the legend of the sleeping princess Zelda.

I'm not opposed to some stories giving the Zelda character more importance for this reason. It is named after her.

She played a important role in the first one.

According to the manual iirc she broke a piece or the whole triforce into pieces so ganon couldn't so easily obtain it. And link set out to get the pieces and put it back together

TotK has a lot of problems with its story, but the growing focus placed on Zelda is only a good thing for this series.

Would wind Waker qualify. She really doesn't even know. Link just picks up the sword and shield and goes at it to save his sister. Everyone pretty much has amnesia.

I think it's kind of stupid to have the hero go through trials when there's no alternative set up.
Suppose homeboy failed... what's the backup plan? And if he can't fail... then why have the trials?

Training. Link is never good enough initially. By being forced through hard situations he gets better. Otherwise due to his courage he would go straight to trying to save the day and get flattened.

Personally I think the devs gave up on the game about half way through development which explains why the game felt so low effort half way through.

With all the reused zones, bosses, unnecessary item upgrade system and the repetitive dialogue.

I could care less about the story in Zelda games. Give me a sword and shield and let me at some baddies and I'm all set

I won't say the combat was bad but it was different enough it was off putting. I didn't do the motion controls though I played on the switch and still it felt gimmicky

Nintendo really wrote themselves into a corner when they kept using the Zelda title.

Because of it, they feel like they have to keep reusing the same characters and retelling the same story over and over. How many times can Link kill Ganondorf before people get bored of it? Notice how all the best Zelda games dont have Ganondorf or dont take place in Hyrule.

They should have followed the example of the Final Fantasy games or Namcos Tales of series. The games have the same gameplay and take place in the same universe, they even reuse monsters. They dont reuse characters and locations, but players still understand that its the same franchise.

But I guess its too late to change that now. Tho Breath if the Wild came reeeaal close to being that game that takes place in Hyrule but uses only new characters. (Link and Ganon both look very different).

Then he wasn't good enough either way.

The trials are what made his heart worthy of using the whole triforce. If he had been able to just grab it right away wisdom and power would have gone to the people most fit to wield them when he tried to make his wish.

Idk if that's the phrasing I'd use, but I do wonder if it was rushed or if they planned it for a quick development. I think what's there is fleshed out well enough but... in any other Zelda game we'd earn the spirit trial items via something like unique pre-dungeon quests.

And of course, there's the sky having like two islands in it.

I think its more likely that they sent like half the development time just trying to get the motion controls to work right. So they had less time to spend making dungeons and stuff.

You remind me of myself a few years ago; I played Skyward Sword in 2018, playing catch-up before diving into Breath of the Wild. It was part of marathon thatn included some I wanted to replay or had missed (which included the OOT remake, Majora's Mask remake and a Link Between Worlds). And, while I played it and finished, it almost didnt feel like a Nintendo's "blockbuster Zelda game".

In fact, it was like what Id imagine a Zelda game would be if it had been outsourced to a fairly decent developer, but one that wasnt fully equipped to create a true Zelda experience with the charm, gravitas and the magnificence of its production. Its still a decent game, but I agree its by far the weakest mainline entry of the last 25 years, and not just in terms of the plot.

Honestly, the only one with an actual good story is Twilight Princess.

For all the flak I will give this game, Koloktos is a really rad boss.

Agreed. Ancient cistern overall was a bright spot of the game.

Fun Fact: Fi is still there in BotW and TotK. She talks in the Master Sword Trial DLC for BotW and when Zelda talks to the MS in Tears it plays Fi's theme.
