In North Carolina, the Monroe County Sheriffs Office received a call that a child was wandering alone on the road on July 7th.

Dispatching an officer to the Waxhaw Indian Trail Road, the child was located and secured, but being autistic and non-verbal, the officer had no idea where the boy had wandered away from.

Being that the responder was a K-9 Unit, and was working alongside his trusty 1-year-old bloodhound Remi, Deputy B. Belk utilized the dogs incredible sense of smell to reverse the normal scent tracking process to find the boys home.

Normally, [scent dogs] track from where a person left to try to find where that person is currently. This time we were doing it reverse, said Lieutenant Public Information Officer James Maye to CNN.

As many of our followers know, bloodhounds use scent articles to track. To obtain a scent article that would help identify the childs home, Deputy Belk used a piece of sterile gauze to collect the scent from his forearms and the back of his neck, a statement from the Sheriffs Office said.

The scent article was given to Remi, who then successfully tracked backwards for approximately a half mile before locating the childs home in a nearby neighborhood.

When arriving, Deputy Belk found the garage door ajar and determined that the child left in a secretive manner and that no negligence of a criminal level had taken place. The parents were understandably grateful to see their son and Belk, who offered a series of tips on how to prevent such things from happening again.

Lieutenet Maye explained the technique of reverse tracking would now be implemented in the training curriculum for K-9 officers.

Ive been around for 10 or 12 years. Ive never heard anything like this being done. Its not something that these guys train on normally, but it is something theyre going to instill in training from here on out, Maye said.

Not sure why "tips" was in quotations but ok <_<

Dogs are awesome. Can't believe there are human beings who prefer cats.

A few good dogs doesn't stop the majority of them being loud and obnoxious creatures with zero concept of personal space.

Dogs are awesome, but they also take significantly more effort than cats.

Any idiot can keep a cat alive, but dogs actually need some level of care.

Not saying one is better than the other, but there's a reason for a preference.

If a dog is loud, that's the fault of the owner.

Dogs aren't naturally loud...

I didn't hate on cats

Saying "I can't believe some people prefer small amounts of copper wire to huge bars of gold" isn't hating on copper wire.

I just pulled a tick off my puppys snout without realizing what it was until it was too late, though thankfully I seem to have gotten the head in the process since I didnt see any remnants of that particular creepy crawlie in the resulting bump from where it had been feeding.

Ended up cleaning and disinfecting her wound in spite of her not liking the smell of rubbing alcohol or the feel of hydrogen peroxide on her skin whatsoever.

To whoever said dogs require more effort to properly take care of than cats, youre correct, but its totally worth it since the bond you forge with a dog is something to be treasured.

I prefer cats, but that doesn't stop dogs from being awesome. Both dogs and cats are awesome.

I could link to a video about a cat protecting a small child from being attacked if they're only awesome when helping out humans or something.

It's not really an opinion thing tho.

Stuff like routinely saving lives, helping blind people live great lives, defending homes, working with police etc is stuff objectively cats don't do. No other animals can, it's only dogs because they are awesome. There's millions of dogs who contribute to society more than many humans.

I mean the very fact you're agitated that I'm happy a dog helped this boy is confusing to me.

But you do you.

Don't blame the dog, blame the trainer. There are no bad dogs, only bad owners.

The failure of Pitbulls is on par with the failure of communism. It fails because human beings are corrupted and flawed.

Exactly.
A friend of a friend of mine has 2 pits. Went over to his place a couple of weeks ago and the male pit showed aggressive behavior towards me because I was a stranger. Nothing too serious, just barking and puffing his chest towards me. Even though I'm not afraid of dogs at all and showed no signs of being nervous or afraid, you should have seen how quickly the owner reacted and how tiny and subservient that dog became within 5 seconds. That's how every owner of every single breed needs to be, not the all too common "Oh, don't worry. He just barks, he's a sweetheart" response while letting their dog continue its negative behavior.

It 100% is an opinion thing whether someone prefers cats or dogs, and it's super strange that you're claiming I'm "agitated" just for goofing on your objectively silly statement but I guess dumb arguments and general obnoxious behavior is your schtick.

You do you, UF.

Though I would love for you to indicate where I was agitated that you're happy a dog helped a kid. You can't, but I'd love to see you try.
