I highly doubt Biden is really feeling compassionate towards Trump. There are things you say publicly and there are things you say and think privately. No one likes Trump except for people who don't know him. But that doesn't mean you can say those negative things publicly. Trump is the only one who gives no fucks about being politically correct. He will talk shit any given opportunity. And that is why some people actually trust him more and thinks he is more honest than the typical politician.
