Despite racial slurs and threats of violence he says he has received, Singh wants to remain in the province in hopes of bringing about change.

"My parents are panicking, and worrying about my safety," he said in an interview Wednesday. "I'll be trying to put more pressure on (the government) to ... give us what we want." His current work permit expires on July 14, but Singh said he hopes to apply for a visitor visa to stay in Canada.

Canadians need to welcome immigrants with open arms and uncap the work permit limit.

Canada has been far harder to get into for ages. They actually enforce their illegal immigration laws.

Its an unfortunate reaction to a few bad apples.

This recently came up after a Jewish school got shot up in Ontario. Here is an article with what premiere Doug Ford had to say:

https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7219365

His message reflects the thoughts of a lot of Canadians I know. Canadians dont necessarily hate immigrants, but dont want them bringing problems from their origin countries here.

I think it's basically people are looking for something or someone to blame for the poor economic situation and cost of living crisis. People that are already racist now feel they have more reason to be outward about it. Basically shitty people just showing who they really are.

Canada takes 10x the immigrants per capita that the states does, you shouldn't talk on things you know nothing about.

Basically. Its more of a quiet, passive racism than the loud direct kind you see elsewhere but as a whole Canadians tend to be pretty racist.

Compared to who? We arent perfect and of course there are some fringe nut cases like anywhere else who are very loud with their racism. Even with that though I would like to know by what standard we are pretty racist. Please list some better countries. Im sure I could list many, many more that are far worse with racism than you could contend are better than Canada.

Canada's immigration policy has opened the borders to a previously unheard of amount, which for better or worse is creating a scapegoat for all the economic issues facing the country.

Or the whole "yeah we have a highway where Indigenous women have been getting kidnapped or murdered for 50+ years, but it's really nbd. what can you even do. in fact it's pretty impolite of you to bring up, anyway Dae canadians are the nicest?"

Our history with indigenous peoples has been abhorrent but we are finally recognizing it and trying to rectify that as a country. To our shame, it has been long overdue and has not reached a satisfactory level yet but the spirit is moving in the right direction.

Also, our indigenous issues have nothing to do with racism towards immigrants so conflating the two is very specious.

I live in Canada too, I've witnessed the discrimination my entire life. We, not you and me mind you, but We as a society have an insane double standard in how we interact with people we perceive to be canadian compared to immigrants (or simply not-white in the case of some people).

Yeah, people here dont identify as xenophobic, and if you ask someones grandma if she thinks shes racist shes obviously not going to say yes, although she might admit to being homophobic. You wont see people yelling at immigrants to stop stealing our jobs and go home, or hear someone using racial slurs in public, but you know what you'll almost definitely see any random day of the week? Those same people avoiding sitting near certain people on the bus, people changing grocery stores because they don't like the new customers, business owners throwing out resumes that have foreign sounding names without even reading them just because they assume they're here on a study permit, people in restaurants complaining about the volume of the family behind them because they aren't speaking english while ignoring the 6 guys at the bar screaming at the hockey game, etc.

We might be "less racist" than certain other countries, but that doesn't mean we're doing things right as a nation, and the general complacency here towards our neighbors who by definition literally act racist but arent Racists is a major part of that.

The Liberal Party's fuckup with international students and temporary workers has been a fantastic way to hand the Conservative Party a majority government on a silver platter. For those that haven't been paying attention, there's been a huge panic in the party since the last week or so.

Misinformation like this guy who doesn't understand that harper was the last one to change the immigration rules in Canada. The liberal government didn't change it until recently but harper used this as a poison pill when provinces, also Conservatives, exercised it fully.

You could say that the current take is that other Canadians are very easily duped and blame the current party when it was the previous party doing this. Liberal not acting faster to scale it back is optics.

If youre in the US, you found it homie. Every other Eurocentric country in recent years that has tried to be better because the US is so bad has had it backfire in disastrous ways. No matter how tough the US may be considered on immigration right now, theres no country thats more forgiving for people who are trying to legally emigrate here.

But we could still be doing better. The fears of overpopulation are real to me. But I think immigration is so fundamental to this country, Id rather see it fall than see it give up on immigration.

I can't say I remember seeing any of these often, if at all. I wonder if it's a city-by-city thing

overall the most noticeable "xenophobia" (if you even want to call it that) that I see is against french canadians. who aren't even immigrants lol

There has been a lot of growing tension over Immigration due to the rising costs of Housing, and Groceries due to the Conservative party putting it front and center as there magic solution to fixing the housing crisis while Trudeau who is increasingly unpopular continues to push it

Not helped along by lots of Post secondary campuses putting a larger focus on courting foreign students to study in Canada
