That's a screenshot from Dark Gathering, but it's been true to my life lately because I've been watching Witchy Precure. Twelve episodes in out of fifty, that's basically a season so I figured I'd post an update.

It's pretty good! I like the characters a lot. They're cute girls with fun personalities and they have a nice dynamic where they're different enough to clash sometimes but they always come together in the end. The setting is good too with all the weird magical world stuff. My favorite thing about Witchy Precure by far has been the talking teddy bear. Mofurun is so incredibly adorable. The cute girls comedy/slice-of-life antics have all been top-notch, which is what I was hoping for when I started it.

The only part of the anime I'm not absolutely loving is the action scenes, mostly because they're so formulaic. Each episode starts with CGDCT stuff for the first half, and that can be a lot of different things. In one episode they're visiting mermaids, in the next they're learning how to use their wands, that sort of thing. All of that is great. Then the other half of the episode is the obligatory action scene. One of three different ineffectual villains shows up, summons a Yokubal, then the girls transform and beat up the Yokubal and the ineffectual villain teleports away. That exact sequence has happened every single episode. The only difference is what color costume the girls wear depending on what gemstone they use, but all the costumes have more or less the same superpowers. It sucks that I'll be really vibing with the slice-of-life stuff and then completely bored during the action scenes. They've almost collected all the gemstones now, though. I'm really hoping they change up the formula a bit once they have them all.

One last thing to note is a good ol' "fuck Crunchyroll" comment. Episode 12 (and thankfully only 12 so far) had subtitles that were off by thirty seconds. I had to watch the episode on two browser screens simultaneously, one muted in the background thirty seconds ahead and another one open over top of it timing the visuals to the subtitles. Man, that was annoying.

Honestly I'm pretty worried about this season in terms of production, but we'll see. Can't always go by screenshots.

When you guys are talking dub for RWBY do you mean Japanese? In my mind dub is whatever isn't the original language.

Technically it would be everything but English, but I knew what he meant lol.

I say dub in a way to ask who they were going to use to act in the show. Since they've pretty much used Funimation actors almost all the way through (barring some exceptions), I wondered if going with Viz would change that at all. Funimation and CR is so synonymous with dubbing at this point, I just used that as the point of reference.

Not anime or manga but I watched Inside Out 2 today and thought it was very good. Feels like it has that spark of creativity that I haven't really seen from the anime I've been watching lately (note: very small sample size...)

It might help that I never saw the original. No idea how this fares as a sequel.

That explains how Gainax somehow managed to make it and probably why it isn't licensed lol.

Watched two more new episodes

I'd heard interesting things about Quality Assurance in Another World. I decided to check it out despite not initially planning to. And you know what, it's alright. First episode sets up the premise (and treats it like a twist even though the title of the anime gives it away) so they haven't done a whole lot with it yet, but hunting for bugs is an interesting idea for the tired video game isekai genre. I like the two main characters well enough. The art style is also unique in a way I can't really describe, too. Everyone looks kind of short and pudgy but not in an ugly way. So far this is a better fantasy anime than that Strongest Magician one, anyway.

Dungeon People was also pretty good! It looks like it'll be exactly what I wanted, a slow-paced low-stakes story about managing a dungeon. This was another one where the first episode mostly just introduced the premise but didn't do a whole lot with it, but I liked what I saw. I'm hopeful it will remain fun and lighthearted throughout.

I don't know what's funnier, the thought of all the 50+ year old audience members absolutely baffled at the entirety of last night's shenanigans, or that this was apparently the most successful collab in baseball history.

Watching Dahlia now, hey I know it can, like, happen, but can we please stop putting out 3 Isekai a season where the character just literally keels over and dies in the first 10 seconds from working too much? I'd rather go back to fucking truck-kun again than have this be the new norm.

Animators never go outside to risk being hit by a truck, but they know quite a bit about working way way too hard, so the default cause of isekai death has updated accordingly.

Really, can we actually go back to the chacter NOT dying? Like, you can just get transported, you know!

While I'm sure that there's gonna be legitimate revelations about what actually happened down the line, Subaru just walking out of the convenience store with a bag of chips and just bopping over to another world for what appears to be no reason is still the funniest to me.

....Though I admit that Kazuma pissing himself and dying from a heart attack because he thought he was going to be hit by a slow moving Austin Powers tractor is probably the best one.

Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction is fun, I like it. I wish the subs were better, but there's a version that improves the official ones somewhat, and that's good enough I suppose.

I think I'm probably just going to end up reading that one.

Dying means you eliminate all concerns about returning to the original world. Simplifies the story in that way.

But yeah you can at least get more creative. Bookworm has the MC being crushed to death by books!

But if they're just transported somehow, that naturally leads to a plot about trying to get back home. That's not necessarily bad, but it doesn't really fit with the wish fulfillment tone of modern isekai.

I think eliminating that potential factor is detrimental.

Also one of the biggest Isekai in years has the character die to get there, and yet the possibility of going back and whether or not they or other characters want to is not only gotten into extensively, it's one of the best parts of the series, so even dying doesn't exactly clean that whole discussion up.

Subaru does not express any kind of desire to go back home, even when discussion of said home becomes a major plot point!

There's a bunch of shows today so I'm going to wait to talk about them all at once, but just want to note how impressed I am with Dahlia's CG integration. There's a shocking amount of it for backgrounds, items, and structures, but it's so well implemented and textured that it blends right in and honestly enhances many scenes. Was looking at a scene near the end and it just occured to me that "oh, huh, literally everything in this shot is CG other than the characters".

There's a version by someone called 4de that fix timings and sub signs and stuff, issues present in the Crunchy version. The subs are still a little awkward in places though, the original truly is bad.

Saturday is a reaaaaally good day for anime this season, huh?

Three new episodes, and man what a disappointing day this turned out to be.

Dahlia in Bloom was alright. A slow-paced fantasy where a girl invents magical tech from her isekai memories. I think I'll enjoy the creation process, and the characters seem good. Not much else to say about this one. I think it'll be fine. That's more than I can say about the other two anime that premiered today.

The Elusive Samurai... I can already tell that this is an anime other people are going to love but I'm going to dislike. I absolutely hated the clashing tones. One half of this anime was comedic, the other half was evil gore. Here's a goofy side character. Here's that goofy side character after they were murdered in the most horrific way possible. I just can't get past how little these two halves meshed together. I can't enjoy the comedic half with all this dark shit happening alongside it, and the jokes make it impossible to take the dark shit seriously. Was I supposed to laugh at the side character getting brutally murdered like that? It felt half like they wanted it to be a joke, half like they wanted me to take it seriously... instead the two tones cancelled each other out and I got nothing from it. It was like the anime itself didn't know what it wanted to make me feel, and the sheer incompetence mostly just made me feel angry. It looked great, really smooth and creative animation, but that's about it.

Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary was still the worst anime to premiere today. It reminded me a lot of Hyouka, another school-setting mystery-focused anime. I wasn't a huge fan of Hyouka to begin with, and Shoshimin looks like it'll have all of its problems with none of its strengths. The best part of Hyouka was that the main girl was enthusiastic and fun. In Shoshimin, the main duo are both boring buzzkills whose only goal in life is to become ordinary. The problem is, they're so incredibly bad at it. Main dude keeps making detailed observations with his detective skills, then going "whoops I guess I'm not being very ordinary lol". I'm already tired of him doing that after one episode. Then there's all the side characters who treat the most mundane shit like a murder mystery. A girl lost her pencil case? Call the police! Assemble a team! Call the super-detective who doesn't want to be a detective but who also can't turn people down for favors so he'll be a help no matter what! They took this nonsense so seriously and it was so boring. It doesn't help that I solved the case of the missing pencil case instantly because they made it super obvious with the way they framed shots, which doesn't bode well for the quality of the mysteries going forward. For example, at the end of the episode, our super-detective overheard a group saying they would do something, then super-detective was blindsided when they did the thing they were talking about! What a crappy anime.

What the hell is going on this season. I never drop anything and I'm already fighting the urge to drop five of the nine anime I've seen.

You didn't like Pseudo Harem, my favorite, so yeah it looks like we're on track to be total opposites this season!

I found the main guy in Hyouka frustrating enough to really kill that show for me so I had this one written off from the start. I don't mind ordinary mysteries as an idea but I can't stand an apathetic lead. I liked Kyon... but I think that would probably not hold on rewatch.
