The ISO week-numbering year starts at the first day (Monday) of week 01 and ends at the Sunday before the new ISO year (hence without overlap or gap)

that's fair but bookshelves don't have a beginning, and if you do order the books they only have one last book, you don't go back to vol. 1 and say "and that's the last book, too"

...How does that even make sense? Book shelves absolutely have a beginning, and an end. You have a first book on the shelf (saturday), and a last book on the shelf (sunday). Hence, bookends.
