They play like a 3D beat'em up (or at least the first one did), and they're pretty competent in that regard.

hmm. beat em ups are one of my least favorite genres... does it have any RPG elements? stats/gear?

oh, of course - I was being more abstract. It's an ARPG with heavy emphasis on movement and positioning

I would watch some gameplay, the gameplauy isn't bad but unless you have an ungodly amount of patience for nonsensical plots and extremely cringe-worthy dialogue you won't enjoy it.

I hope when KH4 comes out and theres a secret postgame movie with ridiculous requirements, at the end it says ABSENCE MAKES THE KINGDOM HEARTS GROW FONDER then everyone speculates and wonders WTF Nomura meant by that for the next ten years.

Even most of that is tame, it's gets worse when you actually know the context, somehow.

I love the series and yes you should play them.

The first game had a fairly tight plot and good gameplay. Kingdom Hearts II improved the gameplay quite a bit, but the plot got a lot more complicated and/or convoluted, and continues to do so with each passing game. But at this point that's pretty much a part of the appeal (or lack thereof) of the series.

I always get a laugh out of Sora's "you're stupid!" And Riku's obsession with the way people smell in Chain of Memories is just weird.

I think there's no way you can tolerate the massive amounts of cheesiness unless you grew up with it tbh.

First game's plot was pretty solid, outside of "Who the fuck was that guy in the brown robe at the beginning?", and of course they didn't reveal his identity until 10 god damn years later in the 3DS title >_>

There was a mysterious room near the end of the first game with some pods or something, and it took them nearly twenty years to finally reveal something about it in Melodies of Memory.

(Although I think someone said it was also in that mobile game, but I barely know anything about that one.)

the peeps on the steam forum say the ports are excellent aside from the following:

in-game prerendered cutscenes for KH1 run at 30fps since that's how they were originally captured

While the game runs in HD (remix), some engine cutscenes use their original 3D lower polygon models which can be silly at times

...

that's about it, they say otherwise excellent.

I remember the PS4 ports of 1.5 and 2.5 had some issues when running at 60fps like some enemies moving at double speed. Is that still true?

not sure, no one else mentioned anything else.

Some non-nvidia card seem to accidentally re-cap your framerate to 60 if you set it to uncapped.... :?

This series peaked with it's first game but I'm still invested

I love Kingdom Hearts 2 so much, like it is my baby. Easily my favorite in the whole series.

But that ain't true. It has a different design philosophy going in.

In KH1, there's a lot more emphasis placed on the moment to moment challenges of the gameplay. KH2 still has this but there's a lot more power fantasy involved.

A lot of people genuinely prefer KH1 more and it's easy to understand why.

Not far off here but I think Kingdom Hearts 3 has better gameplay than 2. All are good games. Now I'll just wait for PS7 for KH 4.

Kingdom Hearts 2's story makes perfect sense to me.

The only thing is that you actually needed to play Chain of Memories to understand what is happening. That was a card game on the gameboy advance and by all appearances looks and plays like an unimportant spinoff. That's a strike against it but AT LEAST that's only ONE side game you need to know.

There were a thousand spinoffs in between KH2 and KH3 and to understand what's happening you need to familiarize yourself with ALL of them. Yes including the cell phone game. Yes including the web browser game that no longer exists.

Oh I understood Kingdom Hearts 2 fine without playing COM although once the HD collections came out I did go back and play that game. I wouldn't say you must play the mobile games or web browser ones to understand the story too although they do give more context. "The story so far" collection and KH 3 is all that's needed.

From a screenwriting perspective it is still incompetently told.

A "story so far" segment should not be required to begin with. It's okay to have the games be in canon and to have important story events happen, but each game (especially the numbered entries) should be its own self contained story. It should treat the other games as lore events.

The "story so far" segment also discourages you from checking out the rest of the series because it just tells you what happens.

Maybe this is just me but I DESPISED Kingdom Hearts 3 gameplay. I felt like I didn't have any control over the gameplay. The gameplay does get a lot better once you remove the attractions in a "you control the buttons you press" kind of way but the second form is such a big downgrade from drives. I feel like the combat helps you hit enemies way too well. The gameplay feels unresponsive.

Oh I mean the collection "the story so far" not the recap segment. I was happy they put 1.5 and 2.5 into one collection.
