I do my own car maintenance unless its overly complicated like rebuilding a transmission. As an aircraft mechanic, I felt better knowing I put in what I paid for.
CBC marketplace had a special where they would use cheap oil (even if you paid for the more expensive stuff), simply topped off your burned off oil, or just didnt do it. https://youtu.be/-avpx8UTakI?si=qlKGgWai4Y0mNMB7 --- If you're not getting promoted, it's not because you're not good at your job. They never replace the $0.50 oil seal plugs which will eventually cause thousands of dollars of damage if you dont eventually get it changed somewhere reputable.

I use Valvoline and I've never been disappointed. Forgot to reset the maintenance light but that's just as much me as them. This. I honestly go to Valvoline for anything small-ish like that that I just don't really want to do myself. Hell, my old car used to have an issue with taillights burning out faster than they should due to an issue with the brackets, and it was a pain to replace them because Mitsubishis used to basically lock those things up like a bank vault. One day I bought some replacements for cheap at an auto part store, and when I was getting my oil done at Valvoline, I just asked them if they'd put the bulb in, and not only did they do it, they didn't even charge me for it, since I supplied the bulb. Even said I could come back just for that and it'd be free, as long as I had the bulb. And I took advantage of that several times. --- Seplito Nash, Smelling Like the Vault since 1996 Step FOUR! Jiffy Lube broke the bottom oil drain plug on my car once and wanted me to pay for it. I told them wtf no you fucked up, you fix it for free. The manager tried to strong arm me by using his size. Thankfully I got everything on video so not only did they replace the plug for free but the whole service was free of charge.
Nevertheless I now take my car to an official service manufacturer place from now on. --- SNARGLEBLAGH ... Copied to Clipboard!

I Bought a brand new wrx in 2018.
Around a year later, it has 14k miles and was due for an oil change. Don't worry, I had been getting them regularly. I was doing errands on a random Sunday amd figured what the heck. Get the new oil now. Went to a Monro. They drained my transmission fluid by mistake. They realized it and tried fixing the mistake. They told me after I sat around for an hour. I texted my father and he went nuts. I drove the car off the lot. Made an appointment at my dealer and had it there the next day. They "checked" the transmission and said the thing was fine. Three years later my transmission completely fails in middle of DC. Had to get towed. The transmission shattered in the housing. The service shop said there was barely any fluid in the housing and they could tell it had been opened before. 12k repair. My car had 61000 miles. 1k over warranty. This all happened because some random shop drained the fluid and my original dealer didn't look closely enough. My car is paid off. I would have bought a new one but I didn't due to the extra money I sank in this repair. Tldr I agree op --- You know how fads are. Today it's brains, tomorrow, pierced tongues. I have a couple of cars and always make sure my cars go to places that I trust and have a good relationship with the owner/chief mech/etc.
One of my favourite memories are when I had a car fail an MOT because of its brakes, I said I'd sort it at home and I got a call a few hours later. My mate at the garage said "you'll need this tool, I'll drop it off on my way home, bring it back tomorrow." I had another friend over to help, who had the same sort of car (E46 BMWs) so we did his brakes too, brought the tool back the next morning, MOT passed no problems. Another one was when another car passed its MOT, I got a call from said friend and he asked me to bring a sidelight with me. When I got there, he said "it's got a bulb out. I've passed it because I can't be fucked to re-test it, but you aren't leaving until you change that bulb. Deal?" Deal. I owed him for the tool anyway so I bought all the guys lunch. pnut027 posted... aircraft mechanicB1? I'm in the trade too (more back office though). --- No, I'm not that one. ...
