Figured I should probably play them before jumping into 3. Or at least attempt to. They're quite old.

You really don't need to.

The storylines are only so connected, there are a couple characters from the first two but nothing you desperately need.

If you're gonna do it anyway, clock it about 35 hours for the series if you don't dawdle.

It has been a pretty long time, but IIRC it took me about 30 hours to beat the first one (ignoring the fact that I did the beginning multiples of times prior to the run I actually won on) and the second one was somewhere around 70.

That said I wouldn't really worry about playing them prior to 3. Yes there is some carry over bits, but it's more nods than it is stuff that you need to know and the two games are definitely dated. All of the super old Infinity Engine games were a blast at the time, but playing them now really isn't going to quite hit the mark.

To say nothing of AD&D, which was a fucking nightmare.

NGL, from the ones that I played way back when those didn't even feel good at the time. They didn't even age, they were just kind of always oof. >.>

Depends on how much you aim to do.

Yeah there's no need to play them before 3, it isn't a direct sequel in any sense, just takes place in the same world.

It depends on how you feel about completing content. If you're just gonna follow the story breadcrumbs I'd say 30 hours is reasonable... but that's gonna be less than half the game explored. Last time I did a full clear of both games it was 100 hours for BG1 and 120 for BG2. That was me meticulously combing every zone though. I'd say 30-40 hours for each if you want to do a pretty full playthru.

And yeah, I second the motion of what everyone else is saying. Just skip them and go to 3. I love the old games but they are *rough* and ugly.

I advise against plaything them. Just do 3

Tbh that's why I want to. I want to have a concept of that world that BG3 inserts itself into.

I already own the games, got them a year or so ago just never got around to playing them. But if they become too tedious I'll just skip them. I remember about 300 years ago on Windows 90-something I had a demo disk that had BG1 and Diablo and some other stuff presumably on it and I played that a bunch but never got far. At least I don't remember beating the demo.
