If you have the powers mentioned by the TC you would be wise to only use them every so often and in different cities. You could make a very comfortable living doing so.

Why? If you play in organized games sanctioned by the WSOP, and win the money legit, you just (at worse) become a famous poker player

Famous but only in the circle of the game.

Poker isnt what it was 15 years ago, where the best players became household names for a few years. Youll be well know within the gaming circles, and thats only if you play in the big tournaments.

If you bounce around casinos playing in the weekday tournaments where the prizes are 5 grand, no one will have any idea who you are.

You can easily make a nice mid 6 figure salary playing in $1-5 thousand buy in tournaments every week.

Yeah, bluffing is a huge part of the game. Its why so many of the pros wear sunglasses and hoodies at the table. Theres a very significant psychological aspect to the game.

Poker is like roughly 80% luck, 20% skill. Sure, being skilled in poker can get you consistently a little far into tournaments, but there's also plenty of other skilled poker players out there and you really need to be lucky to get enough good hands to win tournaments.

Just give me the 30 grand.

If you have the skills and talent of the best poker player ever, you can play in low level tournaments that the best of the best don't even bother playing in. You'd be playing against "weekend warrior" players and none of the big players you see on TV.

You can easily make 30 grand a month doing that.

And you probably have the Luck/Skill percentages reversed.

I think people seem to forget that your not just getting Poker skills. Your getting the skills and abilities of the best Poker player ever. Ergo, bluffing, knowing when people are bullshitting you, keeping a straight face when your lying, card counting, being able to see things most people wouldn't, etc. A lot of which can be transferred into other fields.

Hell, many jobs these days will accept WoW guild leader as a viable skill these days because it shows leadership, problem solving etc. By gaining the skills and abilities of the best Poker player ever, your essentially turning into Monk from the tv show Monk.

We aren't forgetting that, we just don't think it's worth it as the skills being associated to it is being romanticized a bit. Skill plays a factor in poker but so does luck. Being able to read people in a specific game doesn't mean it will translate to unrelated professions. Even the lying thing, lying is not a top notch skill..... and the skill at lying in a specific subject doesnt mean you can take that to any profession. In fact, it's entirely useless in my career and many other careers.

Like this idea that you can take poker talents and the no money average joe can go easily become rich off that is not some surefire or easy thing. Regardless if you work hard. Employers generally aren't jumping at the chance to employ some rando who can play poker well who has no particular skills that pertain to the specific profession and whatever poker skills they do have do not automatically translate well to the job they are seeking applicants for.

You can literally make more than $30k in Atlantic City in a month, bouncing around from casino to casino, playing low-level $500 buy-in tournaments.

You don't even have to worry about bringing it into the "real life".

So, like I said, I think people were just blinded by the "$30k to do nothing" option and went with that.

Ya, I do have to worry about bringing it into real life. As there's more things to consider than just the romanticized idea that I'm guaranteed success just because I can play poker the best.

Its not a magic "I win" button.

It is the skills and talent of the best poker player ever, who is still abiding by the laws of physics and non-magical human brains normally, and whose prowess can be safely diminished by merely shuffling 2 or 3 decks together to mitigate the card counting aspect.

Heck, the main abilities might really just be that you have incredible acting and an invincible poker face, along with just being able to easily calculate whatever math is necessary to determine whether to push or fold each round, and such.

This is not anime level stuff that will cause an anime like response where a secret anime organization decides you need to be anime assassinated now for winning at a card game.

That's exactly it. While the cards you get obviously matter, what's much more important is the ability to act and to read your opponents. If we're talking a world class poker player, that means you're outstanding at reading people and can put on basically whatever air you want, you're great at bluffing.

Those are great skills to have for pretty much anything where you interact with other people.

I gave it a little more thought. I think I'd still take the 30k.

Sure you'd definitely make a lot more money in the long run as a professional poker competing in all sorts of tournaments, but poker is so boring. It would be one of the most boring jobs ever sitting all day long playing hand after hand and counting cards. It just doesn't seem exciting at all, and I don't know how many hundreds of hours, maybe thousands, you have to sink in before you become a multi millionaire and can retire to live the rich lifestyle.

I think I'd rather be the top professional Esport StarCraft player, even if it means I might have to move to South Korea to compete for big money prizes. At least I'd find some enjoyment coming up with different ways of beating my opponent.
