Yes you will.

You will be 70 years old, alive but too tired to work. You will be extremely depressed, leaning into your vices in a vain attempt to ignore reality.

Well, I suppose I could route 20% of my income into retirement, not be able to afford rent, get evicted, lose my job, and die on the street.

But that feels like it defeats the purpose. Think "work till I die" will buy me more time.

The average American needs a reality check when it comes to retirement.

If you can somehow spend half your life paying off a house, college debt, while paying for health insurance, and raising children while saying you were able to save 2 million to retire then you're part of the 1%. Retirement is for people who are upper and upper middle class in modern society. You are literally gambling that your health won't fail as well as you get older or you don't get into some horrible accident. If that happens then there goes your retirement savings. Saving for retirement is a far away dream for your average American now. That's assuming social security doesn't go away too. You're better off not slaving away for a low chance possible retirement and enjoy your life making memories doing the things you thought you might do when you're 70.

I've said it before in other topics like this, but if I manage to live long enough to retirement age, I'll likely have dementia and/or Alzheimer's in addition to other health issues that get passed down to me from my parents.

That aside, I do have retirement savings, which will be going to my sister or her daughters upon my death.

I have a litany of serious health issues on both sides of my family tree, and my meds further increase the chances of these things striking me in the future. At 29, my personal health is already subpar and will only get worse with age.

It's the opposite for me. I did a complete 180 and corrected virtually all of the physical and mental health issues that gave me a very good idea of what it's like to be elderly. I already know what it's like when your mind and body start to go and you lose your independence, although I didn't gain the latter until late in life because of my health problems. I will literally die before I have to experience that again.

That's saying nothing of the climate crisis, which I absolutely do not want to live through.

No they're mostly just relatively young and doomers. Once people go outside and gather things in their life that people live for, their perspective changes. The die young thing is a .... young people thing. One I've thankfully managed to avoid. That said I have plenty of health issues but if I got the career I desire I wouldn't WANT to retire

Assuming this thread pertains to the US, we have the benefit of trying to make our way in an economy on the brink of total collapse. We have the data to show that things are coming apart at the seams.

What can anyone really do but their best at this point? It doesn't matter how much you earn when money's losing value every day, doesn't matter how much you save when the cost of goods and services are growing more and more exorbitant by the day. Nobody can afford homes, people can barely afford rent. People are struggling. So what, then, is the point in making this thread other than to throw it in everyone's faces?

I have no idea how ironic the doomerism here is. People round these parts do tend to lack a lot of self awareness but I just cannot tell.

But people are buying houses, people are making more money, people are making rent. Can we do stuff to make it all better and even easier? YES we absolutely fucking can, I'm not a fan of this kind of doomerism though.

Total collapse? The US has the least chances of most countries of that happening

Some of the people in various topics like this need to "check their privilege". Most people can't afford to put money back for retirement or 401ks and stuff like that. Lots of people are living paycheck to paycheck. And no, people aren't being "doomers" (stupid term) for thinking about how things in America are headed in a godawful direction and how Republicans want to kill Social Security. The rich want people poor and desperate and they're winning.
