The momentum of a thrusting motion helps to curl more weight. Learned that one the hard way. Doesn't do much for muscle gain though.

Yes, do bench first. Start light (just the bar) for a set to warm up, and then add a bit of weight until you can't knock out 6ish reps. You're mostly just transitioning from not lifting at all to sort of lifting. Your real training will begin in like a week --- I don't believe in belts.
