I don't know if many remember back in January I was offered a full time position at my current place of employment. My manager said it would come with a little bump in pay, to the tune of .54 cents. Not much, but I hadn't been expecting anything so it was nice. Long story short, I did not get the raise and was basically given the run around by HR and my manager, about how it used to be the policy--but no longer is-- and if I would like more pay they MIGHT be able to post the assistant manager position and I could apply for that. My manager also promised me that she would fight for me to get the best possible raise when merit raises came up in May.

I didn't go for the assistant position--because I was still relatively new and didn't want to step on any toes of people who'd been there longer. May has come, and with it my raise. It was a mid range raise--which was not what my manager had discussed with me.

I go back to talk to HR, and the store manager, and they say their hands are tied pay wise, but they'd be happy to offer me that Assistant manager position (with a 54 cent raise...not enough really).

I do think the asst. manager would be good for me, and definitely improve my resume-- but I'm feeling jerked around by the company.

I have an interview with a position in another company I'm passionate about--but it would be about a dollar an hour pay cut.

I feel like I should get out--but also have the opportunity to get on track to management.

Well that's in then, stay with them and hope to grow or take a cut and be more happy. Got work with your situation.

In my opinion if you feel like they arent going to or able to back you up then they will never properly do right by you.

Whether its the corporate structure thats the issue or that they are unwilling to do it is kind of irrelevant.

should have taken the assistant manager position, who cares if you step on toes because youre relatively new?

the people that were there longer would have gotten that same opportunity if the company felt any of them were a fit for the position. hopefully this experience was a learning one for you and the next time a promotion is made available to you, you take it

I honestly didn't feel ready myself 5 months ago when it was offered, but now looking back I realize I would have been able to do it easily.

I currently work at a supermarket, in the front end as the closing service leader. The position I'd be getting would be Assistant Manager of Customer Service. I was also just made the employee of the month for May, so I do feel appreciated by the company (just not monetarily). I know the value I bring to the company, and would bring to another company-- and they see it too--just can't pay for it.

I mostly just needed to type this out to get my head around it.

Technically this is illegal--read my whole post though.

Practically speaking, they will wiggle out of this. What are you gonna do? lawyer up and it's your word vs theirs so there is nothing you can do.

If you had an email from your boss, talking about the pay bump you could do something.

Ultimately, you have 3 options:

  1. Accept the position and start looking for a new job in 1 month. When other places ask why you're leaving, simple cite the fact that you were promised more and they went back on it--future employers will 100% understand.
  2. Decline the position on the grounds that you were promised more, and that was a condition of you accepting the job in the first place. Remain part-time and make them hire someone else. If they open interviews, apply and then demand +$1.00 raise when you accept.
  3. Eat the loss.

At this point I would just focus on leaving them sooner or later, but this is good chance to build up your resume before leaving.

It seems like you are "only" frustrated, but not in a situation where you curse every day you have to work there. So make use of that.

Use the time to build up your chances and search for another job, and jump the ship when you have something solid at hand (without a pay cut).

No need to be loyal to them, when they are not loyal to you.
