if so, is this something people actually go out of their way for? we ate frozen burgers with sandwich bread because we were poor. I didnt realize this was a desired thing

Melts at burger places always seem like they have buttered sliced bread with grilled onions, cheese, and some burger sauce.

I miss the Burger King melts. I dunno if they're still available in other places, but they're off the menu here now :(

They weren't as big as like a Bacon King or whatever, but they were really good and a decent value.

When it comes to burger a patty melt is a grilled sandwich consisting of a ground beef patty topped with melted cheese and caramelized onions between two slices of griddled seeded-ryebread.

That is an actual patty melt.

Those are patty melts(or should be call patty melts, not saying you are wrong) and yes they are just toasted bread in place of bun at most fast food places.
