I'd be curious as to how many of the people rage commenting were/are actively involved in Boy Scouts, because as someone who was super involved for years this change warrants a resounding "okay" out of me. High school me would have fucking loved it. Today, I do recognize that there is value in having spaces to foster healthy male bonding, so I can understand the disappointment in losing Boy Scouts as that sort of venue, especially for boys who don't gravitate for sports. But frankly Boy Scouts wasn't exactly good at in the first place (and the changes to make it good would be considered far more woke than letting girls in) and the alternative to letting everyone join is just shutting down entirely, so that safe male space would be going away regardless. At least this way they can still have an organization kids can join focused on conservation, outdoorsmanship and civic duty.

I was in scouts back then and still am now because of my teenage BIL.

Just to clarify, even though the BSA allows girls, they don't allow mixed troops. The troops are still separated between boys and girls.

Yup. The requirement is at least two adult leaders(meaning someone who's passed taken the Youth Protection training course, not some random parent) at every event. Also you can't be alone with a scout anywhere for any reason. Either two adults and one scout or two scouts and one adult situation.

This happened in Canada ages ago, it's fine.

Ownership of assets is now a different organization. This different organization cannot pay out on behalf of the BSA and its sexual abuse lawsuits (especially ones filed in the future).

Also some stuff about membership dwindling and adding to their resource pool.

Except Boy Scouts and Girls scouts don't do the same things. Girls scouts don't tend to do all of the outdoor activities that Boy Scouts. Growing up I had a number of female friends that were mad because they wanted to do all the fun stuff the Boy Scouts were doing but weren't allowed to join.

I was in boyscouts for one year only in 2nd grade so 1998 or 1999. My dad took me out at some point and was adamant I wasn't going back, but I never knew why.

Since he us gone, I still don't know why but I have always wondered. Did he save me from some predators or my original idea was since it was held at a church on normal meeting nights maybe it was too religious for his liking

No. They allowed girls to join Boy Scouts several years ago. Dropping Boy from the org name just makes sense at this point.

Boy Scouts is a religious organization. Most troops are sponsored by and meet at a church. There's references to God in the oath and laws you recite at the beginning of each meeting plus a prayer as well.

1. The Girl Scouts don't want to be more inclusive.
2. The Boy Scouts did this not because they want to support inclusivity but because as a boys only organization, their membership was falling.

Boy Scouts is a religious organization. Most troops are sponsored by and meet at a church. There's references to God in the oath and laws you recite at the beginning of each meeting plus a prayer as well.

Ah okay. I didn't realize that it was religious because i never went to church as a kid none of the religious stuff ever connected with me so I was mostly unaware

The BSA has backpedaled to allow "god" to mean "any sort of higher power". The official statement is "Its policy is that the home and organization or group with which the member is connected shall give definite attention to religious life.

Eagle Scout here as well. Yeah our Cub Scout troop met at our vol fire dept too. Boy Scout meetings were always at church. I agree most troops aren't overly religious but still, the overall organization is religion based. Wasn't aware of that backpeddling though.

Honestly, one of the fun things about BS was the "me and the guys" vibe. You know, there just were certain things you wouldn't have said or done with girls around, when you were in middle school.

Having three orgs with one being coed sounds fine to me.

No in the US, Cub Scouts is also co-ed and Venture scouts is as well. Cub scouts has been like that since 2018 and Venture scouts have allowed girls for decades.

So now the scouts and get into the cookie game. People won't know that they are buying from scouts whi happen to be girls and not girl scouts. Those girls scouts gave been shrinking thw cookies and upping the prices. They need competition will cookie fans need it.

Yeah popcorn and peanuts. My troop learned 20 years ago that selling that stuff was pointless. We just cooked 100 gallons of brunswick stew 2-3 times in the winter like the fire departments do and made a killing. Most of us went to summer camp free every year because of it.

I was in boy scouts 30 years ago and could have sworn there were a couple girls in our troop. We had to make covered wagons at the den mother's house and some girl made the best one. Maybe it was her daughter or something.

Girl Scouts are just a cookie company extortion ring. Boy Scouts were the only ones that did any actual nature stuff. But since they were the ones with a pedo problem, they were the first that needed changing.
