Been a minute since I made a watch through topic, but I'm in the late 970s in act 3 of Wano and god damn, this show made me fucking mad.

I legit did not expect Kanjuro to be the traitor. If I'd seen more than 2 Kurosawa movies maybe I would have seen it coming, but fuck. That plot twist actually caught me off guard. I legit liked him earlier on, wasn't expecting that twist. Fuck.

Wano's been great BTW. Hell, between Wano and Whole Cake I've loved the more intense turn the show's taken. Multiple important characters have died RIP Pedro, I legit didn't think they were gonna kill you off for good: , all the deaths in Wano and the Wano flashback sequence, etc.Things are getting real.

Also, Oden was fucking dope, glad we got such a deep dive into his history, and Whitebeard and Roger as well. One Piece is so good at building up its own lore.

Getting closer and closer to being caught up. I'll do some arc and character rankings soon, been loving this show.

lol. I didn't really post much after I initially started Whole Cake, so I didn't share many of my thoughts on that arc.

But I will say, I loved Whole Cake. First arc in a LONG time that Sanji was actually cool and enjoyable, had some really cool fights and plot implications, and they fucking killed Pedro, wtf.

Also been enjoying Wano so far, although I think my favorite part of it was the flashback to Oden and his followers. It was a pretty great plot-line in its own right, but it also just showcases how deep One Piece is willing to explore its own lore, I love it. Some of the best world-building I've seen in any show.

Yeah Sanji was cool again in that arc.

Oh fuck yes, Jimbei just showed back up. About damn time.

I both love and hate how long they've teased Jimbei joining the crew.

The anime surprisingly dropped a very subtle hint about Kanjuro being the traitor in the opening, weeks, if not months before it was revealed in the manga.

The opening would have characters show up with different colors in the background. All the villains in the arc had a yellow background intro (and nobody caught on to the fact that Kanjuro was the only "good guy" who had a yellow background).

Yeah I just saw the episode count in Crunchy Roll and realized that. God damn. This is by far the longest arc right? Which makes sense, theyve been building up to Wano for a long time, but damn.

Oh shit, thats pretty interesting. I always skip the intros at this point, mostly in the interest of saving time, but thats pretty cool that they didnt just straight up spoil it either, since theyve definitely done that in the intro before.

Im still so mad about Kanjuro tho, wtf. I really thought it would be on of the characters they introduced in Wano, not someone whos been around since fucking Dressrosa.

I think the main reason the Kanjuro plot twist was so shocking is because a good character betrayal like that is so outside the realm of what happens in a shonen manga like One Piece. I mean it's just taken as a given that good guys are good guys and bad guys are bad guys, and they're always honest. If they change sides they do it honestly and on camera and dictate their literal thoughts on it.

But a bad guy, playing a good guy for like 300 straight episodes, only to reveal it as a con later? That is pretty messed up. Way more messed up than anything else in One Piece.

That's a really good point. Looking back there were probably signs I could have/should have noticed that would have at least hinted at it, but you don't even consider it as being a real possibility. They do blatantly hint that there's a traitor in the group, but by all expectations the more expected outcomes are that it's a misunderstanding, they're actually a triple agent, or if there is really a traitor they're someone brand new that we didn't get too attached too.

Mother fucking Kanjuro? This dude who's been the lovable bad artist since Dressrosa?

God damn One Piece. Just when I think I know how you operate, you throw me for a loop.

Good shit tho, top tier moment in the series.

Thanks man. Had a lot going on in my personal life the past few months so I wasn't watching as much, and when I did watch just didn't really have the energy to talk about it. Happy to make these topics again, I really enjoy discussing the show as I progress.

Honestly, I actually really liked it. I tend to not like time travel most of the time in media, with a handful of exceptions. Often it's just used as a cheap plot device with a myriad of plot-holes. But strangely, it really worked for One Piece here.

A) It's hard to have plot holes in One Piece because anything and everything can and will happen. So this far in, if something doesn't make sense at first, I give it a pass because somehow shit always comes together later on.

B) The time travel in Wano was weirdly very... Tasteful? IDK, it just only amplified the stakes, it didn't really make anything more convoluted, which is rare for time travel plots. It just emphasized how important this specific raid plan was, and made every blunder and every time the alliance got foiled that more devastating.

Plus I've accepted that there's a Devil Fruit for everything, so fuck it, why not time travel.

Next arc starts slow and lures you into thinking it'll be a breather arc...then it all hits the fan. The anime has only just started getting into the meat of the arc. In the manga the arc is nearing its conclusion. I'd say read the manga. Watch the fights on YT.

At least Ill have some time before Im caught up with the manga. Im weirdly kinda excited to start over, this series is such a sprawling epic. I remember when Skpyia felt wild and in retrospect that was so early on and tame compared to other shit thats happened.

currently at episode 1024. the great Onigashima raid is heating up for sure!

Luffy, Law, Kidd, Zoro and Killer fighting Big Mom and Kaido, Chopper curing all the Ice Oni and fighting Queen, Robin slapping the shit out of that spider bitch...

it definitely caught me off guard but that plot twist involving the Yakuza boss working under Orochi was even more unexpected to me.

heck i had no idea who was that dude with the glasses rolling with Oden's samurai crew at first. then it made sense when they showed him losing his shit and reaching out to Orochi to work for him. lol

The Oden flashback was great, lot's of exposition into rodger's era which is always welcome. Still hoping he's not dead in some magic way but unlikely. Did not appreciate the bait with Yamato :(

Aw man. Kanjuro vs Okiku was pretty intense. Even though he wasn't as "big" of a villain in comparison to other big bads in the show, he's a top tier villain for me. One of the best best con man/double agent/back-stabbing-assholes ever. True commitment to his role, and Okiku desperately trying to reach out to his humanity in some way, but not being able to cause there's no humanity left, then killing him.... Brutal.

God damn. This show's so good.
