The mother tried to keep him out of public school and her insurance ran out. It is the system that failed here but the mother also should have made clear how dangerous her son was to the school.

There should have been a big strong cop going with him everywhere or someone who could protect others from him when he got violent.

Mental issues or not this was a big strong violent guy who had zero control over his rage so someone who could physically handle him when he went off was needed.

If you're unhinged enough that you'd try to murder someone over your video game you probably shouldn't be out in the general public.
I was about to say this. Disabilities or no, if you beat someone half to death over a toy, you don't belong in society.

You either need to be in prison, or a full time care facility. For the safety of yourself, and everyone else.

Like it obviously doesn't absolve him in any way of the crime, but it's clear the school failed in a number of ways here. It just looks bad because the perpetrator filed this suit and not the victim.

In the suit, Depas lawyers claim that Matanzas High School employees knew of his disabilities, triggers, and problem behaviors, along with his history of wrongdoings, including spitting, shoving an aide, intimidating school staff, and shouting at his teachers. It also highlights that because Depa is a large black male student, he is subjected to misperceptions and racism.

School staff aren't super human and this is the kind of behavior they're dealing with. And this isn't like 20 years ago where parents were supportive of teachers and were active in disciplining their children at home so that they were cooperative in school for teachers. The lawyer is demanding the world here.

We need state funded full time mental care facilities, full stop. I'm pretty sure Reagan fucked this up, iirc.

There are people that simply cannot function in society, and people shouldn't have to worry about getting beaten to death by them.

You're confusing serious mental issues with "it's just discipline bro". The school never should've had him in the first place, and it's a major failing of the system that he wasn't put into schools that have the training and resources to deal with him.

even if this kid was in a mental health facility he'd have to be pumped full of drugs just to be controlled, apparently. nurses aren't any better equipped to deal with this violence than teachers are.

There are staffed trained in such wards specifically to handle these scenarios. Generally a burly security guard with extra steps. There's never enough of them, though.

You're wrong. Most mental health facilities have orderlies who are there to restrain patients if needed. They are equipped to deal with violence. And the cohort of people that are in danger are a small, trained group of people who see him every day, and have intimate knowledge of his mental health status.

I fail to see an issue, I feel like you're being obtuse on purpose.

Hell of a stupid gamble to make. "Just don't touch his switch and everything will be fine, nothing else sets him off" needs a lot more context to justify.

It sounds like the school did fail him by not implementing proper protocols given his disability. If the school couldn't implement the proper protocols for whatever reason, then that school wasn't the appropriate place for his education. The system failed him.

well it's good to know you don't actually know anything about healthcare, especially mental healthcare

healthcare workers get assaulted all the time, especially in mental health facilities, and because of attitudes like this they're expected to just deal with it.

You're not making sense. You said nurses aren't equipped for this, and you're right, they're not. That's what the orderlies are for. The problem is, as always, underfunding leading to horrible understaffing and lack of oversight.

I take it we're missing a chunk of the story from the article. Who knew he wasn't a fit for a the school and when did they find out? And did the school recognize they couldn't handle him?

and now post the pay for orderlies in mental health institutes.

that's the average for every hospital.

and even still, $26/hr isn't enough to deal the the constant threat of being assaulted and nearly dying

oh and that's also only divided into 40 hours/week...how many of them are working 50-60 hours?

and I also live in the good part of earth where min wage is $15/hr, lol

Mental problem or not the kid sounds like a piece of shit but he definitely doesn't need to go to jail. Maybe at school he's the top dog but at jail kid would just get abused and he wouldn't even know why. They need to stop trying to force him to go to school for everybody else's safety. At most he needs to go to a mental ward.

I agree 100% with this. He needs mental health treatment in a controlled setting. Prison would be just another incorrect placement for him.
