Not anymore. There definitely was a time when he was the most popular, but that was decades ago.

Yes. Because the boomers make up a large percentage of the population and are most familiar with him.

Popular, no. Probably Batman or Spiderman. But I think he'd be the most known.

Superman was popular, but for movies, toys, merch, even comic books they sell really poorly and have been getting worse for 20 years now.

its so bad s small game/comic store by my house stopped ordering new Superman titles because they dont sell, but he orders the 10 or more Batman titles each month.
Even back issues never sell for him at most stores. He just lost all his interest I guess

It's the problem with Superman, any time he loses it's basically a "But how?" moment. When characters like Batman lose, it's a reminder that behind everything they do they're still just a random guy at the end of the day(albeit an incredibly rich borderline superhuman one).

Superman's problem is that it's really hard to fix decades of him being essentially the undefeatable invincible bastion of what a super hero "should be," while the opinion on that has changed pretty hard over the years. He works better as a conflicted villain or side character these days.

According to the radio who read a list of the top 20 comic book heros, Superman wasn't even in the top 20.

Spider-Man is the top seller, last I checked. Kids fucking love Spider-Man.

Batman has also done better than Superman in character popularity and merch sales.

Superman is probably the most iconic superhero, as a lot of other designs are based directly off of him, but he's not the most popular.

It's like how everybody knows Goku, but One Piece has far outsold Dragon Ball.

Hes much more interesting conceptually as a country boy from Kansas who just wants to fit in and have a normal life as Clark Kent, but who is trapped in a life of violence and alienation due to being an invincible God-being.

The problem of course being that introspection doesnt sell super-hero media.

Honestly, would love for that concept to be visited again. But yes, it's all about the spectacle and punching the bad guys hard enough that they turn in to paste. Also side characters dying for dramatic effect, the more beloved the better.
