I'm using writer loosely here. It could be for video games, comics, or any other kind of creative media that tells a story.

It's an interesting scenario because, on one hand, it has to be something that speaks to you enough that you want to lift content from it. While, on the other hand, it has to be something you've given up any chance of ever directly adapting. You can't create Rebel Moon and do a Star Wars movie later on. And on that note, you can't create Star Wars and do a Flash Gordon movie later on.

I think I would borrow from anime. It's unlikely that I would ever do adaptations of Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, or Yu Yu Hakusho. I figure that I appropriate character designs, story scenarios, etc. without worrying. "Oops, I wrote a story where a supernatural supporting character has white wolf ears, but now they want me to do a live action InuYasha. I guess I've been caught at it."

There are also certain franchises that have really left me in the dust. I don't think I could hop back on the Mortal Kombat train or the TMNT train if I wanted to. And I'd have less than zero interest in doing an MCU movie unless they hit the reset button. I'm going to waltz in and write a movie that'll make a splash in a franchise that has been going on for two decades? Yeah, good luck with that.

I would simply invent my own work without lifting from any of the media I've encountered and consumed over the course of my life.

Ancient heritage. Because you cant steal your own culture.

I mean, you technically could. Like, you could steal your Native American great-grandfather's blanket and sell it to a museum without compensating him.

I am making a satirical novel of a notorious property known for its cruelty and all I say is I got the idea to turn that hellish experience into a heavenly one and ran with it.

In my ~real writing~, nothing. I definitely let my liking for certain works influence the direction I take my own writing, and I'll occasionally put my own spin on some interesting ideas I encounter, but I make a point not to outright "steal" anything.

In my for funsies stuff, though? Oh, man, everything. Settings, casts, rule systems, you name it. I'll even just straight-up rewrite the original plot with tweaks to suit the story I'm telling. Just about the only thing that differs between my fics and the original work is characterization!

I guess I mean things like Superman wearing a cape because Zorro did or Rocky being a prizefighting bum because Marlon Brando could've been a contended, but instead was a bum in On the Waterfront. It doesn't have to be direct plagiarism.

If you did Don Quixote in... New York, outer space, the marines, etc., you'd have something to work with. And you'd give high school teachers an opportunity to highlight the influence of classical literature on modern storytelling.
