Never played a Star Ocean game, this one is on sale for $6.79 on Switch and i'm kind of craving a more retro RPG. Any opinions from those who have played it would be appreciated. Thanks I love you.

It's not bad, not great but not bad.

Star Ocean The Second Story is where it's at though, best game in the series.

Its okay. It doesnt really excel at anything, but its not a bad game. Second story R is one the best RPGs ive played in a long while though.

Worth a try for $7 though? I'd buy the 2nd one but it's like $44 and I don't want to drop that if I wind up not liking it much. I can live with spending $7 and not getting into it and uninstalling it if that's the case.

It's not going to be $7 but Second Story is way better.

Just wait to try second story first instead imo. Youre more likely to drop it and miss out on a GOAT game

Personally I would pick up number one for $7. The opinions of people here regarding how good number two is are quite accurate, but one is still a solid intro to the universe (even if the chronology of the games is off).

Technically The Last Hope (number four) is the intro to the Star Ocean universe, and Til The End Of Time (number three) is the final game. While most of the games share the same universe, only First Departure and Second Story are close enough in the timeline to share a character (young in 1, a parent in 2).

Im a big fan, if you want you can PM me any Star Ocean questions.

Thanks, I dropped the $7 on it, I had like $5 worth of gold coins anyway so I spent $2 out of my account, I can deal with that. I'll give it a fair chance and keep an eye out for a sale on the 2nd one for sure.

Yeah, Star Ocean 2 is the best (atleast between the first 4, never played 5 or 6). But the first game is still solid, and going from 2 to 1 might be rough, ESPECIALLY if you get the recent remake of Star Ocean 2, which changed and streamlined quite a bit, compared to Star Ocean 1, whose PSP/Switch versions are still very much like retro action RPGs, for better and worse.

So yeah if you think you'll play both 1 and 2, checking out the first game first I'd say is the right call. It'd also make certain story stuff in Star Ocean 2 more meaningful.

For that price, that's really good. First departure still feels really incomplete though.

Seemed kinda boring after awhile. It has a good opening hook but I lost interest in it. For 6.79 though it is worth a shot. I paid probably 8.99 for it. I don't remember exactly less than full price.

It's a really fun game, but the story is not deep. Honestly I am replaying old story games lately and I think that while some modern crap sucks(microtransactions) games got a lot better with storytelling after 2000

It was a SNES game and that team's first game. In that regard it's really good. If you compare it to indie games, I think it holds its own pretty well.

But yeah, definitely not a full price sort of game.
