What do you make of the whole "objectifying women is bad" trend going on in today's gaming scene? Is it considered harmful to make adult female protagonists sexually attractive in some way? How did it come to this?

Not every female character needs to be sexualized, but if the developers of a game want to make them that way, that's totally cool.

Thinking it's somehow harmful is ridiculous.

Video games are art so there shouldnt be any limitations on how characters should look. People should recognize they can also be a form of escapism from real life same way movies can be and that doesnt lead us to believe that all women or men should look like Rambo or Pamela Anderson.

I feel like most people already know this and its only a handful of ultra, tumblr gen progressives coming up with this BS.

I was going to type out a lengthy post, but I think this one sums it up enough.

We already have our game rating systems like the ESRB, PEGI, Cero, etc. etc. As long as the game isn't breaking any rules for the age group the game is going for then that should be that.

I doesn't have to be extremes when it comes to female characters.....like they are either eye-candy or well-written. Video game history's most popular female characters were just sometimes.....both for their time periods. Samus, lara craft, and jill valentine etc.

(I am willing to agree that someone like tifa genuinely did get most of her fame for just being hot though. Got to call it like I see it on that one, lol. Aerith always had a good bit of popularity also but tifa definitely won out. FF7 remake and rebirth is going good things to give them more characterization though).

Men like their game guys hot and buff.

Women like their game girls sexy and badass.

Both like what the other likes.

Non-gamers who hate gamers dislike what gamers like just to be contrarian. Then they pretend most gamers are men and justify it. At least Final Fantasy which has hot female characters has a big female fanbase fyi. Tifa is an icon to many gamer girls and Aerith too.

I think it's only a thing with the terminally online, for both camps. But there is a problem with conservatives becoming more extreme and they're the ones actually pushing for reactionary laws with some of them savvy enough to use left wing arguments out of context to justify it.

Most of the insanity about Stellar Blade's character has already been worked out of the system, they've been bitching about it for what feels like months. Now that the game is out - as long as it's good, no one that actually plays games is going to care.

This feels like an extreme position. Lots of women and men like sexualized characters and that's okay. It's like saying anyone who likes gore in games is the same as a violent killer. Except this isn't even close to gore. These games are so tame and people make strong statements like that. If you find yourself more concerned about what the girls are wearing in Mortal Kombat than the graphic depiction of someone having their intestines ripped out and being strangled with them, you need to really ask yourself what your priorities are.

While true, Video Games are meant to be an escape from reality.

There's no world of reality where I can score 40 goals in a hockey game, but I can in a video game, just as I can't roam around a world where every guy is 6-5 240 pounds, has 4% body fat, and every woman looks like a swimsuit model, but I can in a video game. I can also be a lightning fast hedgehog, a humanized mushroom driving a go-kart, or a cowboy in the early 1900's

Fantasies are fantasies for a reason. They are literally the opposite of reality.

Video games are also an artform. And if that's how the artist want to depict their characters, who am I to tell them not to?

People want to be hot. What their definition of that is can be different, and I think a variety in video game character appearances can't really be a bad thing.

But a lot of these designs aren't even demonstrative of the average person. I don't live in a place known for attractive people, and I can find better looking people out and about without trying than are in some games.

That said a warrior looking like a supermodel is kinda hard to believe in a game geared for realism, but in a world with magic and dragons and the like it isn't hard to Believe either.

Good thing all women in games aren't actually ugly.

The only culture war is the perpetually horny types complaining women aren't as objectified as much as they used to be with giant jiggle physics tits and bikini armor.

For example characters like Tifa saw an ever so slight tit reduction, which still left her with large tits, and you had the perpetually horny types in devestation like her character was ruined.

She never got a reduction. It is made up nonsense. She has had an established cup size since Advent Children and Remake used that. People were literally freaking out over nothing and then freaked out in the opposite direction over her swimsuit in Rebirth even though they were literally the exact same size.

It's fuckin' stupid.

Totally normal gamers have convinced themselves that Western games no longer have attractive women (false) and that there's an active campaign to make all women in games ugly (also false) when in reality all that's actually happened is suggestions that maaaybe, just maybe, we should see a variety of portrayals in women in videogames. That's it. The mere suggestion that not all women in games need to be 10/10 stacked dime pieces will cause those folks to lose their minds.

Look at Stellar Blade. Outside of that IGN editor's goofy ass remarks, criticism of the lead's design has been mild at worst, but they'd have you believe there's an active campaign against the game, despite it getting 7s and 8s across the board from the same reviewers these guys are mad at. And those 7s and 8s aren't even good enough and I've seen multiple reviewers attacked for not scoring it high enough.

And anytime they try to bring up an example of their "Western game baaaad" bullshit, it's always the worst screengrab possible and it's also always the same like, 5 screengrabs.

I would argue that's the strawman. What is oversexualization and objectification? Because if it's stuff like Bayonetta, 2B, and Eve then I have to wonder what an actual naked woman having sex with someone would be. I made the Mortal Kombat comparison for a reason. The game has gone absolutely as far as you can go on depicting gore and received no criticism... for the gore. They made the costumes less revealing because people thought the women were oversexualized. I just can't comprehend of what causes that kind of thinking outside of puritanical views of sex.

I don't play nearly as many video games as I used to, so I may be behind the times, but what games are out there that are oversexualizing and objectifying the female characters, as opposed to making just attractive characters that the gamers themselves are oversexualizing and objectifying.

Other than something like GTAV, who is doing it with obvious sarcasm attached to it.

Not asking in an argumentative way, genuinely curious.

Because people are desperate for their culture war. The groups on the right want this to happen so bad. They have to be perpetually outraged. They want women to be hot and super naked. That's the whole crux of the issue. They want to play the game with 1 hand.

Horizon:ZD gets a ton of shit because Aloy isn't a slim perfect waifu with loads of fanservice. They're convinced she's fat and ugly and all western women are fat and ugly.

I was part of that culture. I used to be make posts on reddit outraged over that shit. I gave up when I realized I was always mad over nothing. It was all so absurd.

There was a game called final fantasy mobius a few years ago and it's lead character was revealed and his outfit was the skimpy oversexualized style many female characters had to wear

And the exact same people who will defend putting a nun in a game with nothing but a mini skirt, stripper boots and pasties send letter after letter to square until they redesigned the character to be less sexual

So I can't take any argument in favor of oversexualized designs seriously when I know the people defending it would 100% be outraged if a male character dressed as skimpy

Oh yeah, definitely. If youre going to sexualize your characters showing equality about it will (mostly) stop assumptions that its just meant to cater and objectify to one crowd. Giving them SOs of their own that theyre visibly close with to show theyre an actual character would blow away the unicorns and help matters a lot too.

It was a thing before release. The default costume was apparently too sexy and they covered him up more. You could get revealing costumes in game, but the default one was way tamer in the release.
