While Odyssey is a masterpiece, I greatly enjoyed playing Galaxy and Sunshine afterwards. I think Galaxy is probably my favorite in fact because of the music and vibe.

Odyssey is the only 3D Mario I can play anymore. I got all the stars in 64 back in the day, but it's aged terribly and I can't really tolerate its controls and camera in the modern era. Galaxy(s) are meh at best. Sunshine has always been a pile of ass.

I really wanted to love Galaxy, and parts of it I do (especially the soundtrack). But if I'm being perfectly honest, I played Galaxy twice all the way through and Odyssey only once, and Odyssey was still infinitely more memorable.
I think trying to look at it as objectively as possible, Odyssey is a way better game than Galaxy. I would say Odyssey is probably one of the most finely-tuned games ever made. For me though, Galaxy is by far the more memorable experience and is one of my favorite games of all time. A lot of that is because of nostalgia perhaps. I did return to play through it as an adult and still loved it as much as I did as a kid though. The music is also a major factor as well, since it adds a lot to the whole overall feel of the game.

Also RE: Mario 64. I feel like context is necessary for the game. There's loads of problems... but it was literally one of the first 3D platformers. And at the time it was mind blowing how well they stuck the landing.

The camera is also bleh, but that was a problem in many games for some time around that time period. It took some time for that particular problem to get solved.
The game also came out when literally nothing else was like it and you were still able to not only rent games but consoles from Blockbuster. Hell the SM64 we got from Blockbuster back in 96 was in Japanese. One of the best Christmas I ever had. Didnt understand anything being said or what was going on but I still got through Bowser 2 before having to give it back.

Odyssey is one of the best platformers I've ever played, but it's super easy to go back and enjoy the previous ones for me.
