Anyway, ignoring the leftovers of 261 in this topic, this movie never really seemed to get its due props for ages. I think it's since the first movie played things more straight whereas this one opted to be more of a parody.

No kidding. Interjecting politics into a discussion about a movie featuring a theocratic fascist ruler exiling or executing those who refuse to obey his moral code is ridiculous, especially in a time where theocratic, fascists in real life are forcing their moral code upon their own citizens.

the problem with escape from LA is that it's pretty much just a remake of Escape From New York. The story beats are almost 1:1. Kurt Russel being a badass makes it entertaining, but NY is the vastly superior movie.

I still can't get over the fact that badass action hero skill set somehow, inexplicably, includes legendary basketball prowess.

I like the part where the four bad guys think Snake is so bad ass that instead of just shooting him dead they take him up on his offer when he tells them he'll give them a chance.

On topic, I agree with the observation that it's very underrated. Not as much of a parody as the first installment, IMO. There's some interesting social commentary about the direction of some trends at the time, as you point out.

I also think the basketball scene at the Coliseum was very cool.

Plus, Pam *fucking* Grier is in it.

Everything happening between the basketball scene and the final standoff was fucking atrocious and this is coming from someone who digs Pam Grier alot.
I mean the movie is already a 1:1 beat for beat rehash of the original but then it has all this terribly outdated (even for its time) CGI and misused over the top tone it just downgrades it to passable at best in large part to Kurt Russell carrying the whole thing.

There was some weird shit in there for sure. Other than the gliders scene, it seemed like they couldn't figure out how to end it. Like they threw darts at topics on a dartboard, and said "hey that'd be cool!". No one seems to have tried to link them coherently.

Still trying to figure out how the rotor is stored.

I watched it not too long ago and I thought it was really fun. It kinda gave me From Dusk till Dawn vibes. Campy movie thats fun, doesnt take itself seriously, bad visual effects, and has some cool sequences in it.

Yeah its not as good as the first but theyre two different movies in tone. LA feels like a parody of NY
