This is going to be a pretty big list if you're counting long running franchises since pretty much all of them have had some kind of spin-off game. And then you have all the mascot franchises which inevitably all try something like a kart racer or a party game.

Pokemon Legends Arceus. GF considers it a mainline game, so you could call it a "different" entry. Honestly I still consider it a spinoff though. Cuz of how different it is.

Instead you do these island challenges where you fight Totem Pokemon after doing some puzzles/challenges. After you beat all the Totems on an island you fight the Island Kahuna. Also they were the first games to subvert the evil team plot. It's old news now, but Team Skull was the first evil team that was just a group of troublemakers while the real villain was part of another organization --- Let's-a go! Okey dokey! ... Does it count if it's the second entry in a series, with a return to the original's set up in the third entry? That could disqualify Zelda 2, US Super Mario 2 and Castlevania 2. They were different, but there wasn't a lot of history to deviate from at the time. Castlevania 2 did introduce some elements of the Metroid style that lead to Symphony of the Night, which would also fit and essentially established a new standard for the series. Is Metroid Prime's transition to 3D enough of a difference, or was it still enough of the standard Metroid gameplay? A lot of gameplay mechanic changes in Gears of War: Judgment that were not welcomed by the community. ... Copied to Clipboard!
