It says something that in the 80s the fear was that an external enemy would impose their way of life on the US, but now Americans fear other Americans rather than some foreign power.

Decades of focused propaganda by our enemies to drive a wedge between people to weaken us.

No, I mean when the government looked into election interference by Russia in 2016 they found an almost equal amount of paid propaganda in support of both parties. They find wedge issues and then intentionally inflame them until everyone hates everyone else. This has been extensively reported on and a known strategy Russia and other countries have been using for decades. Luckily for them useful idiots play along because they're looking for an excuse to hate anyway.

Facebook found 470 inauthentic accounts associated with approximately 3,000 political ads from June 2015 to May 2017. The ad purchases and accounts are affiliated with a Russian "troll farm," dubbed the Internet Research Agency, which spreads pro-Russian propaganda and false information across the World Wide Web.

Most of the ads did not contain references to the 2016 U.S. presidential election, voting or the candidates. "Rather, the ads and accounts appeared to focus on amplifying divisive social and political messages across the ideological spectrum touching on topics from LGBT matters to race issues to immigration to gun rights," Facebook's Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos said in a blog post on the company's website.

I find it interesting how even the USSR wasn't as distruptive as modern Russia, because back then they only supported communists, now they support any extremist.

I think attributing current divisions to foreign propaganda when we have perfectly good American propaganda is misguided.
