Imagine going from a mildly quick platformer with weird, washed out colors and only 2 decent zones out of 6...

To a lightning fast, colorful and vibrant platformer with a rehaul in level design, to the point were the first 6 levels are unforgettable bangers

The difference is almost Street Fighter 1 to 2 levels

There was no disappointment in Sonic 1.
And the MC Escher style special stage was hardly considered wash out.

Really if anything you could make the comparison between Altered Beast and Sonic 1, as the free game bundled with the system.

And yes, I had the Genesis before Sonic was introduced.

My first direct introduction to Sonic was Sonic Advance 2 watching a classmate play it in elementary and Sonic Advance 3 which I got for myself and later heavily. Sonic Advance 3 was a super banger

Not really, it was arguably the first time games that could compete with arcades came home.

It made Nintendo Shit itself.
Nintendo did everything it could do hold back progress.

It kinda fucked over Sega though, as Sega was dominant in the arcades.

Ehhh, that may be true, but the games were not exactly life long winners. Things drastically improved once Sonic came out. Sonic, Streets of Rage, Comix Zone, etc. and so on. Sonic 1 is an infinitely better bundle game than Altered Beast.

It was kinda interesting to watch in real time though.

It wasn't that much of an improvement. Sonic 1 still holds up. Street Fighter 1 is unplayable.

Also this.

Sonic 2 is undoubtedly better than Sonic 1, yes, much like SF2 is undoubtedly better than SF1.

However, Sonic 1 still holds up, even with noticeable flaws, whereas SF1 is just... Terrible, and it's a wonder how they got SF2 out of it. This realization got lost in time until they released the SF collection, and people realized "Oh, no, SF1 really was bad."

Ya, and that was how things were back then? That was nothing.
Half the time you weren't getting new-nonrented games until Christmas.
The Atari was still still a close memory.

Oh, right. I was being silly with my "dark times" comment. I'm saying it from the perspective of now. Trust me, while I was rather young at the time (I was born in '87), I had a brother who was into video games at the time, and I have memories from that alone, so I get it. I should have made it more clear that I was being facetious.

Listen, we had an NES with Mario Bros/Duck Hunt, Rad Racer, Ice Hockey, and TMNT, and then we went to a Genesis with Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Streets of Rage, and Bonanza Brothers. I fully get the "You barely ever gets games" feeling.

Oh, you are totally cool, your convo has been okay.

It just really was an interesting time.

Honestly, I first heard about The Genesis on 1-800-USA-Sega, as well as Sonic.
Nintendo had 1-800-Nintendo.
It's what us kids might call in the middle of the night for shits and giggles.

I do really - really miss arcades though.
And ya, Sega kinda shot themselves in the foot with that one.
I do truly think Sega was a victim of their own success in that regard.

Sega did that a lot, yeah. The Dreamcast was amazing for what it was, at the time, for example. Great games, a built in modem for actual online play, etc. and so on, but their marketing absolutely sucked in like, 90% of the world. Sega just didn't know what to do with a good idea once they actually had it.

Ya, it is stunning how their marketing was like a 10/10 in the late 80's early 90's.
But I guess that was internal stuff between Sega of America and Sega Japan.
Either way, they really did push the whole industry.
