Saw a video with a woman having a Gengar poster and made me realize I rarely see people have posters, shirts memorabilia of the new generation of Pokmon it seems to be mainly Gen 1.

What happened? Is it because the newer Gens didn't get a Poke rap? Or it something else.

There are a lot of factors, Gamefreak likes to pander gen 1 as much as possible, the general population of people is going remember gen 1 for nostalgia when pokemon was at peak pop culture, etc.

Gens 2 and 3 got a Pokerap, though it wasn't pushed anywhere near the original.

The other issues is that, as supervann said, Gamefreak loves Gen 1 pandering. X and Y was largely "Please remember Kanto": The Game.

The other thing is that later gens are more iconic among competitive battles than casual fans. Look at how often you see Skarmory in competitive teams. Do you remember ever seeing Skarmory merchandise?

Garchomp's cry practically sets off PTSD for trainers old enough to remember how terrifying Cynthia was (and still is), but I bet you Dragonite gets more attention.

Hell even among Gen 1. Snorlax and Tauros are in 99% of RBY competitive teams (Ignoring lower tier Smogon setups), still nowhere near as popular as Charizard who has never been competitive. (As far as I know)

My wife and I have a ton of pokemon merch and maybe 40% is gen 1.

I really like Scorbunny, Spiragato, Falinks, the Ghost Dog, the Ice Pokemon and most fairy types

I also like the Remix pokemon like Koffing, Mr Mime, Rapidash and Marowak.

Spiragato made me get a Grass starter for the first time in my life. It's evolutions suck but man is it at the perfect intersection of reality and cuteness.
