Without reading it, is it because Salt Lake City is willing to use taxpayer money without the direct consent of their people to entirely pay for an overpriced brand new state of the art arena with an agreement that all profits go directly to the private hands in the NHL rather than back into the public purse?

Calgary did the exact same shit to prevent the Flames from leaving. It's pathetic.

Has to do with them losing money, and not able to get a new arena in the Phoenix area. Not sure how much Utah/SLC are footing the bill for the arena. Im sure they will be sharing (at least at the start) with the Jazz

surprised there weren't any in that area already, thought they were pretty much everywhere at this point.

The usual logic for that sort of thing is that the arena will bring in more money from other shows and boosting local businesses so it will pay for itself (eventually). It's usually a lie, though.

As for "the direct consent of their people", governments don't give a shit about that, and never have. At best they'll fake it until they see how much they can get away with. Mostly they just do what they want and then they try to convince you after the fact that it was something you also wanted.
