I keep seeing posts about how poorly it's doing compared to Remake/16/15/etc, but like...aren't its sales still good considering the climate of gaming these days?

Like, I feel like most PS5 exclusive games are bound to sell worse than games on PS4, or games that come out on multiple consoles, right? PS5 games are more expensive, and not as many people even have the console, for one.

I never understood people who use sales like this to quantify whether a game is good or not.

Wait for square to announce if it did well or not, it's really not on our job to actually know. But yes of course FF7 Rebirth is going to sell less than FF7Remake because Rebirth is a PS5 exclusive.

It's almost as if exclusivity is a bad thing.

Rumor is that its sold around 2 million copies. Not exactly a flop, but not that great either considering 16 did 3 million first week and Rebirth also happens to be the best reviewed FF game in decades. It'll probably do fine in the long run, but I imagine SE will be more willing to bring these games into Xbox in the near future.

Its a shame if Rebirth has weak sales numbers.

I know that article you are talking about and that is just someone making a estimation based on trophies, so just more guessing.

Right to this moment we still do not know a single thing about how the game did aside from physical sales in japan and the UK.

Its all just more ammo for the usual internet social media and forum mud-slinging. If the game really did sell badly then its just going to be used as a "I told you so, final fantasy sucks unless they return to turn based combat. Series is dead otherwise!!" kind of thing, and if it sold really well then its just "get with the times, this new action based trend makes money!". Then there is the exclusivity complaining so sell good or bad is going to be used as ammo for those arguments, and blahblahfuckityblah. The usual, lol.

For Square, its a flop. If it only sold 2 million that is really low numbers for a Final Fantasy game. It might not even be a financial success with how much money they put into the game.

For comparison, Persona 3 Reload and Like a Dragon 8 both have sold at least 1 million copies each and are considered big successes. These games were very likely much cheaper to make.

I think the PS5 exclusivity really hurt the game. Not releasing it on the PC was a real dumb move.

I would say no because sales will uptick again when part 3 comes out and they will continue selling it perpetually

FF7 og has kept selling and selling and they just port it over and over

think of it like how streaming changed movies with the whole thing where Scarjo was like "this isn't fair I not getting the cut of all this streaming money!"
games are doing similar things
in a generation or so super HD enhanced version with all 3 will be sold and people will buy

these are cash cows that you can keep selling and selling without doing much work

That depends on the definition of flop.

If its sales being low enough that it makes little to no profit after factoring in the cost to make it, probably, but that will likely change when it comes to PC and as it sells more over time.

If its whether SE considers it one, basically everything they make is a flop as theyre massively out of touch and have incredibly unrealistic sales expectations.

The second entries in the trilogies tend to sell less. And then the finale part will do better than the 2nd but maybe still not as good as the first.

PS5 probably did it the most injustice out of everything. My friend who's in Japan basically implied that PS5, and even PS4 had very little presence in the biggest electronics stores he could find. They'd have like 5 displays, the Switch and PC had like 20+ each.

They'll still have their US/Europe audience because these ppl are like crazed fans, and a lot of dev teams from Sony moved overseas. But that also means they'll start to lose big jp centric devs. They'll lose all the indies in PS5 and a lot of 3rd party devs like Capcom, Squeenix, Bamco, etc.

FF7 being this insane reputation game selling like an indie RPG on the Switch is probably gonna be a huge red flag to a lot of future projects

I would have gotten it, if the Deluxe Edition wasn't so hard to come by.

PC had some physical and some SEs, some digital codes, and a whole lot of displays from the pics I've seen.

It's also Japan. You think they're ever gonna forsake outdated media? There are probably way more cd collectors than in any other countries

They'll be gaining more money after the exclusivity ends.
Sony must've paid a lot for the exclusivity, so it's not a loss.

Should have released it on PC too.

exclusivity plus the second part of a story so people who didnt go through the first...its gonna dwindle down. the third part is destined to sell even less
great game but the mini games are a bit overbearing. i spent more time on the last chocobo flying game than any boss so far. granted, it was optional

Between potential surprise Intergrade dlc, questionable ghosts added to the writing, and the general inflated prices of everything lately I certainly held off buying day 1, which the first game did not have all those things going against it (with what was known on day 1 of its release of course).

How big is the ps5 instal base? It should have sold atleast that with some extras from super fans. Without that it's a flop.

And even if Square was being 100 percent transparent in sales numbers so far, there'd be people finding ways to twist it into whatever narrative they're trying to spin.

It's a good game but quite padded. Remake got a price decrease pretty quick though I think. And was free on PSN so waiting for a sale is justified if you don't mind waiting.

Not really. They're very full games in their own right.

Knowing SE and their high expectations, I wouldn't be surprised if they do announce in their quarterly report that FF7 Rebirth fell short of expectations lol.

It's 2024. For AAA games you need to have an extremely high opening or else it is a flop. It needs to be record breaking each time. That is the reality of AAA games.

I mean, if you want to experience a more in-depth look at the world of FF7, they definitely accomplish that.

If you haven't played them, personally i'd just wait til part 3 is out and play through it all in one go, with a focus on story unless you want to invest a few hundred hours <_<

I have no nostalgia for FF7, having played the OG and Remake for the first time last September, and I enjoyed both the OG and Remake. I haven't played Rebirth yet cause I'm replaying Remake right now.

Unless you're looking for that truly original experience or are allergic to modern ARPGs, idk why you'd walk away hating it unless you just really hate story extrapolations/changes.

What's the worth of that money when the decision actively dilutes your main big IP. If they continue this Sony will eventually stop moneyhatting because guess what, no one will care about it anymore.
