I ask because there is a persistent stereotype of a bleeding heart vegetarian/vegan who will judge people for eating any sort of meat, but I've yet to encounter anything remotely like this in the real world. I have plenty of vegetarian friends and colleagues and have not heard a single world of judgement or scorn from any of them. They genuinely don't care.

Really, I've encountered a lot more hostility and mockery in the opposite direction: people who get offended and defensive when they discover someone doesn't eat meat. Obviously, it's not everyone or even the majority. Just that they exist.

I'm not a vegetarian myself nor do I strive to become one (though I have managed to reduce my meat consumption in recent years because using black beans instead of chicken for your protein is a great money saver). Just something I've noticed.

What have your experiences been?

Nope, never

Not once. Plenty of the opposite, although to be fair those people were trying to be edgy funny but were just lamely repeating the jokes of others who also weren't really that funny.

My old next door neighbor. For a while anytime I started the grill or smoker he would try and spray it with his hose, even though I grill just as many veggies as I do meat.

But the other half a dozen or so vegans/vegetarians are all chill af.

No. Met plenty of selectatarians though.

My cousin is one. Wouldnt let her kid go to a friends birthday party because it was at a petting zoo.

Technically. Girl who grew up in my neighborhood. She wasn't like that back then but we are "friends" on Facebook and she's very militant about it in her posts 90% of her Facebook posts are vegan shit talking about how horrible people who eat meat are.

She's even kinda talked shit about her own family for it with stuff like "imagine how horrible it is to see people you love do this"

Yes. I was riding the subway in NYC and some girl bursts into the cab and literally started screaming about all the environmental damage that has been done because we're not all vegan and then tried to have out a bunch of brochures with vegan info on it. Everyone just kind of ignored her.

Not vegetarian. All the vegetarians Ive known are laid back and rarely talk about being a vegetarian. Ive encountered vegans though that are really preachy and their entire persona revolves around them letting you know they are vegan and why its superior. Pretty rare in real life. Only happened a few times.

Online though is a battleground when it comes to food pages. Its nothing but the people who hate anything vegan and go out of their way to tell you how much extra meat they will eat vs the off their rocker vegans.

Like I dont get it. Im omnivore and have a fairly meat heavy diet but I love a good vegetable based dish. There are some quality vegan dishes out there. I was off dairy for 5 years due to digestion issues but have been back on it the last few months. In my time off it I experimented with more vegan dishes and products.

I really dont understand the hostility towards it.

Thats been my experience. Never met one in real life. Plenty of haters of vegans and vegetarians, though.

Quite a few, but I used to live in the most vegan place in Europe.

Also, Ive met far more non-militant vegans and vegetarians.

I live in DC and have encountered climate change protestors who were advocating both vegan diets and the careful management of fossil fuels, but the several vegetarians and vegans I know personally are quite chill.

Unfortunately, yes. Tried telling them that chickens often eat their own unfertilized eggs for protein but he wasnt having it. I just raised chickens for fresh eggs for three years, so what would I know.

Climate change is a bit different than dietary beliefs.

Most have been fine in my expierence but those militant ones do exist. Probably a case of they are typically louder on the internet with it too.

But yeah I remember eating a Irish pub that served food and the waitress sat and talked with us cause it was slow. I had ordered chicken tenders and they came with a side of celery she noticed I wasn't eating them and I told her I didn't like celery and she said we'd make a perfect couple cause we could order that and split it.... didn't think till later she probably was flirting with me....

Just the once. Dated a girl who was friends with my sister. This would have been in my late teens. She spent most of the date talking about how vegan life was the best, and was most unimpressed when I got a steak and offered her a lift home in a sports car.

In fairness, my sister had already told me that she was batshit and I ignored her because, well, teenager hormones.

That said, I'm friends with a few folks who are vegan/vegeterians and they have no issues with meat-eaters. There's never been any issues. As long as nobody goes hungry, nobody's ever complained.

Yea. A guy I worked with, Vegan Gary.

He was pretty cool but he was really full of himself and he would loudly insist that milk was only for baby cows.

I tried to somewhat agree with him and said I thought the meat industry should be more ethical and that only pissed him off more.

Only a really understanding and accepting one.

never really knew if people were being serious about this or not. far more often it's the other way around, with people shitting on vegetarians and vegans often out of nowhere

I've met one carnivore Person in real life. Only way he eats veggies is in deer meat stew. Other than that only non meat things he will eat is like bread cheese etc like on a burger.

But I only saw him say something about once. He got talked into cooking for thr shift at work and he told us it was gonna be like Boston butt or something and said he didn't know what sides it was gonna be cause he didnt do vegetables.
